WordPress Help -- minor issue

I'm trying to create a sidebar. Basically I want:

BUSINESS
Adult Help.
Mainstream Help

TECH
Wordpress
Linux

ETC

Menus & widgets are needed but if I do the widget as TECH, then add another as a Menu item under TECH, it goes to the bottom.

How is this structured? If I do the title with no link, as I want, the subtitle needs a link. Obviously the link goes to the category. Where do I get that code?

Is it Menu, then Widget under Menu Categories?
MENU - Tech no links
WIDGET-- Wordpress links to category/Wordpress-subcategory-subcategory
WIDGET-- Linux /Wordpres-subcategories (find category links)

Reorder Menu then categories follow automatically?

When I coded sites, widgets & menus weren't around. I'd code my sidebar with the syntax I forgot plus /category-name/listing. Now that I've forgotten it all, and there are new features, I'm lost with no GPS here.

And, I assume, it's easier to first create a few categories and subcategories so they show up after I create the structure . If so, I'm not totally lost, I'm in the right town but can't find the neighborhood or streets

If you're using Wordpress you HAVE a GPS, it's the Wordpress codex. I would recommend starting with becoming familiar with Wordpress' template hierarchy, and moving on to themes.

And you can always use your favorite search engine to find information:
Wordpress sidebar tutorial
Wordpress menu tutorial
Wordpress widget tutorial

Easiest way.
create 2 menus

Business

Tech

add 2 widgets to your side bar.
Call Business menu in 1
Call Tech menu in the other

Look at the bottom in the right panel in menu. You have to assign location to menus you create...

Thanks all. I'll try doing it shortly and see what happens. Glad I came here before sending that requested email that was rescinded.

Edit: it's 9:00 pm. Will try now and cross my fingers

Okay. Deleted and started over. Two menus done. Widgets ask which format to use.

I want the subcategories under the Menu subcategory. So ... categories is the right choice? I know it isn't Pages or HTML.

I'll try that and see. It seems to make the most sense.

Played around and found out my theme supports one menu. Now I know why only one showed. Now I'm thinking I need categories for each category. I'll try TECH as a category then add subcategories.

Sorry to those uninterested in this. Better to update those helping me on my progress than a simple "done" or "fuck it."

To create subcategories, all you need to do is drop the page below the top level page and move it to the right. Sorta like identing the page.

Technically, I did it right. Created a category, then another under it, then a test post.

TECH
Tech Category One. If you click it, theoretically the page should show Testing Post Category ... right?

Categories, under Posts in the Admin, shows all above. But ... on my site, CATEGORIES shows the category AND subcategories on the sidebar. Now, I'd let that go if they weren't lined up to the left.

CATEGORY
(two spaces or periods ) Subcategory

I can't see how to drop or indent. I'm on the iPad now but can switch to Windows laptop; it's right next to me.

What's odd is every category IS under Post/Categories but on my sidebar, you only see one Category then three unrelated subs. I triple-checked the assigned categories to the posts, same with not choosing dropdown.

I'm wondering if the theme limits the listings, and if so, can that be easily changed? I can't fathom why a free theme would do that -- unless they want you to upgrade and pay. Yet, a coder can change that line of coding on a free theme, I'd think, unless the code was somehow hidden, calling a link to the code in the theme to make it work. That sounds pretty comprehensive for a free theme.

My mind is racing, thinking of all sorts of strange things, when it's probably a simple fix.

i been working 12 hour days getting ready for the holidays. did you ask the author of the theme? good luck!

Technically it's a widget rather than a menu, so you can have as many as you want.

@hdbuilder not if it's a widget.

Have you tried to use a widget to create the menus?.

No need to explain! I just thought it was a dream or something. The author wants $$ to upgrade before answering questions.

I created the menu first. Tonight I'll try widgets only and see if it takes. I don't remember where I left off

brassmonkey 10-09-2017 01:26 PM

i will try to find you something. email me the name of the theme and url to the author

I would but need the syntax for the link. Pernalinks are set to topic/postname so theoretically I need to get the link syntax correct

I'll play around a little and see if I figure it out.

Just tried. I need to know which widget to choose. HTML works, I'd think, if I had the URL. I'll go look around and see what I come up with.

HairyChick 10-09-2017 04:55 PM

Yes yes yes!! Thank y'all so much! I used Widgets/HTML and tested two links and both worked. I'll keep at it for a while and see if I can change spacing and indent.
