Virginia?s Danica Roem to be first openly transgender state lawmaker in U.S.


Virginia's most socially conservative state lawmaker was ousted from office Tuesday by Danica Roem, a Democrat who is poised to become the nation's first openly transgender state lawmaker and who embodies much of what Del. Robert G. Marshall fought against in Richmond.

The race focused on traffic and other local issues in suburban Prince William County but also exposed the nation's fault lines over gender identity. It pitted a 33-year-old former journalist who began her physical gender transition four years ago against a 13-term incumbent who called himself Virginia's "chief homophobe" and earlier this year introduced a "bathroom bill" that died in committee.

"Discrimination is a disqualifier," a jubilant Roem said Tuesday night as her margin of victory became clear. "This is about the people of the 13th District disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias . . . where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it."

Marshall, 73, who refused to debate Roem and referred to her throughout the campaign with male pronouns, declined an interview request but posted a concession message on Facebook.

You can call the NJ governor race an anti-Trump statement but anyone from the area knows it was an anti-Christie statement. As Christie's Lieutenant Governor, no way was Guadangno ever going to win.

Christie is/was the only US politician who came close to being as reviled as Trump. And deservedly so.

i saw some interview with one rep governor last week (forgot his name) and this guy cancelled his candidacy and when he was asked why he said "no republican can win any elections as long trump is the president".

so no need to act for the dems - the reps will grill trumps fat ass soon.

Ok people. I live near this area and get local news from DC. Here's what you guys are not understanding: MOST counties in VA voted for the incumbent. The big cities in northern VA that voted blue did so so for the following reason:

Many of the liberals in northern VA used to live in the liberal wasteland of Maryland. They moved from Maryland to VA because the Maryland Democrats raised their taxes so high, they couldn't take it anymore. So now these people are voting Democrat in Virginia, where they will now raise taxes so high that no one can afford it, unless you work in DC. It's just foolish.
