NFL User Experience: Total Garbage

Today is Thanksgiving in the USA. A day when friends and family gather to eat turkey, fight and bicker then go do a purely American tradition: watch NFL football.

This year there are three games on so a full day's worth of watching....pure garbage.

I blame instant replays. A touchdown? Yay! No wait - let's review. Tick tick tick tick....two minutes go by, everyone standing around....a touchdown! Yay?

It's the same with a catch. IS it a catch? Let's review. A fumble. IS it a fumble? On and on, there's no flow, everyone standing there waiting while a ref looks at an iPad for five minutes....it's fucking horrible.

What the fuck happened to the NFL?

College football is headed in a similar direction, in my experience. I haven't been to one 3 hour game yet this year. I'm going to Texas vs Texas Tech tomorrow night, would not be surprised if that's a 4 hour game. Went to a 5 hour game last year.

You're right. No flow. Stop, stop, stop. I can't watch football on TV anymore at all.

The fans wanted instant replay review.
Fans used to go crazy when they could see the call was wrong on the replay
but the refs didn't use it.

Don't watch. don't buy fan gear. Problems will be fixed, prices will be lowered

I prefer how MLB handles it where it isn't up to umpires when to view the replay. Give NFL and NBA coaches limited replays to use.

Yes but with baseball it's even worse somehow. The umpire is standing right there, two feet away, so is he safe or is he out? Oh, we have to watch a super slo-mo replay fifty times. And the same guys reviewing the play are the ones who were standing two feet away from the play! So they are reviewing their own calls. It's ridiculous.

What Makes NFL Games Take So Long?

Actually, in baseball and football the reviews are done by an officiating crew in New York. The up/ref gets on a headset and talks to them while following along on a screen, but the final call is made by an official in the replay booth.

I don't know about the NBA, but the NFL already has coaches challenges. They get two per game and if they use both and win both they get a third. The league itself reviews all scoring plays and turnovers.

I watch a sports channel in JP of NFL games a few days after the game. 30 minutes top. Can watch 4 games in 2 hours. Love it. Check your area maybe you can too.
NFL shows waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow. Boring.
Soccer is great. Almost non-stop.

I'm getting annoyed by these little split screen 15 second commercials between plays during the huddle, along with the normal 3 minutes of commercials every 7 minutes. Everyone has a cell phone, do I really need to see 15 sprint commercials in a 30 minute time period?

American football has always been standing around waiting for stuff to happen.

3 hours of people standing about, about 20 minutes of actually playing.

Tennis seems to be the only sport where replays actually work.

They are quick, and of course always right. And limited.

Not a tennis fan, but it is one thing i notice anytime i watch. Other sports should take note...

I was glad I watched the last superbowl! First one I actually watched in full. Pretty sweet.
