What was done before was a misuse of the Antiquities Act. The act was originally made (in 1906) to allow the President to proclaim things as "National MONUMENTS".

In the last couple of decades...Presidents figured out that this was a "loophole" which allowed them to do MASSIVE Federal land grabs without the consent of Congress.

Today President Trump returned a lot of land to the state of Utah. Where it had always been since Utah first became a state. In other words the exact same way it was until Dec. 28,2016 when President Obama, as a lame duck President, "Proclaimed" 1,351,849 acres of Utah land to be a "national monument".

All Trump just did was return things EXACTLY the way they were exactly one year ago.

No "national park" disappeared and nobody had to say "goodbye" to the land. It's the same as it was just 12 months ago.

Help me out on this: Wouldn't Trump's action today make alot of land at Bears Ears National Monument to now be available for oil and gas drilling? Same question about Grand Staircase Escalante Monument? Some of those areas are rich in Native American Artifacts.

To Trumps credit, he is supposed to allow for co-management of these areas for Tribes. I doubt this will happen or be fair, but I'll give him benefit of the doubt for now. But if this is true, then why the Navajos threatening to sue Trump? And why wasn't the decision made without consulting the Navajos? And why are so many others announcing they will sue as well?

Of course I'm no expert. From my HippyLiberal (and proud) view though, I see this as something that didn't need to be done. I'm also really bothered by the fact that some of that beautiful landscape could be be one day ruined forever by mining outfits, oil and gas companies, etc.

They were beautiful then. And they are still beautiful now.

Me too. But like I said, nothing has changed there in any way at all. The land wasn't "protected" by the Federal Govt. since the beginning of time. And only was put in a fake status as a "monument" exactly one year ago.

I'm not sure what the Feds in Washington D.C. have done, or COULD even do to have changed anything for the "better" in Utah during that short time period.

But who knows? Maybe there is oil underground there. I know we won't agree on this...but in my opinion that would be a GOOD thing. Great for the country, great for the economy, and great for the people of Utah.
This isn't 1890 anymore. Oil can be extracted without all the nastiness to the environment by using modern technology.

I don't have a portfolio anymore. The housing market collapse and subsequent economic downturn prompted me to sell off everything back in 2013.

Too bad. I would be doing fantastic now with the market at new record levels on a daily basis (and about to take off even further with tax reform and corporate tax cuts). But at the time I had to do what I had to do.
