Sad situation, can't see a solution anytime soon by the looks of things

We have an area like this in Sacramento... I made a wrong turn and suddenly I was on a street surrounded by hundreds of homeless people. It was the strangest thing. They were all walking around like zombies.

There is a possible solution but it isn't politically correct to even suggest it.

Not just Christmas and it is anywhere there are overpasses or access to the LA River.

I go into area like Eagle Rock that are supposed to be gentrified but there are cardboard shacks everywhere.

Portland has a big homeless population. It's bad enough there is now a "permanent" homeless village in the city. We are starting to see situation occurring as they start to gentrify parts of "old town" and turn it into upscale neighborhoods but the homeless refuse to leave so there are very expensive apartments with people living on the sidewalks in front of them.

Is that in Burnside? Regardless, how much are the gentrified apartments going for? I grew up in Vancouver, Washington across the bridge from Portland :thumbsup

Yeah, it is in that area around Burnside. The apartments that are for rent go anywhere from about $2K a month on the low end for a 1 bedroom to about $6K for a two bedroom. Buying one will run you around $500K for a one bedroom and up to as much as $1.5million or more for a 2-3 bedroom.

I'm sure liberal policies have something to do with it as more liberal cities tend to have more services and help for homeless people which then attracts more people looking for those services. It is, however, a lot more complicated than that. One big factor is mobility. Homeless people tend to live in big cities because the public transportation makes getting around a lot easier.

What a great thing to be a liberal city:

There is an ongoing "issue" with all of this. The people that move into these places tend to be educated, young, professionals who want to help these people, but at the same time don't really want them living on the sidewalk in front of their building or next to their favorite coffee shop. Among the problems is the city lacking the resources to help them all so they end up with nowhere really to go. Add in the reality that this part of the city still has some soup kitchens and homeless shelters in it so many homeless come to that area of city to get food and find a safe, warm place to sleep.

There is a homeless "village" in the city and there has been talking of making more of them, but at this point, I don't think anyone has any real good answers for all of this.

I love living here. I would like to see us find a way to help more of the homeless people in this and all cities.

As for illegals, that's another story. There are ways to cure this issue that have nothing to do with building a wall.

Simple solution

Tell churches that to retain their tax exempt status, they have to get involved in reducing the number of homeless. Maybe use their funds to build shelters and offer them training.

Cities are mostly ran by democrats and they won't do anything

Actually, with the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, many homeless people (in states that went through with the expansion) now can get health insurance when they may not have been able to get it before. Also, the number of homeless people in the US declined by about 20% under Obama.

He could have done much better, but to suggest his administration did nothing is incorrect.
