Best Bitrate For 1080p Videos?

The #1 most time consuming (and annoying) aspect of building a Members Area is converting the videos into the proper size, format and quality (bitrate).

I understand the concept of 'bigger is always better' but when it comes to 1080p videos (especially 4k) the file sizes can be HUGE. They take forever to download, too.

So for 1080p videos, both 4K and normal HD, what is the desired bitrate for streaming and downloads? I know the tubes always want higher bitrates but those are for promos. I am talking here about videos for Members. I want to find that balance between quality and file size.

And yes I have 720p and mobile versions, too. :)

Thanks in advance! :thumbsup

tbh 8 to 10 for 1080p and 5 is good for 720p, although, we also cut up to 25 for dvd quality :thumbsup

That's about the range I am doing now. With full scenes at 30 mins+ the file sizes are HUGE tho. Downloading is not a big deal for me, I live in New York City. But for those living in other countries how do they feel about downloading a 800mb file?

I am actually streaming the 720p versions. I don't do true 4K or even DVD quality. With so many sites (I have a huge network) the server space needed would be insane. So as I said, I try for a balance. LOL

Thanks for your response! :thumbsup

I think 1080p is overkill, most users won't see the difference. But a good quality for 1080p is 6kbps and for 720p 4kbps.

Pornnerd - Try an experiment for me. Make a youtube account and set it to private. Upload one of your videos (Set To Unlisted) in its current format at 1080p and let youtube convert it using its own custom algorithms for the best possible viewing experience verses size, which is what youtube does to every video. Its part of its business model.

Then download the video back to your end and delete the one on youtube. Check the bitrate and settings on the downloaded video to see what google / youtube currently feels the very best trade off between picture quality and size is.

Then you can either use the settings you find in your own program, or simply batch upload your videos to youtube and let them do the math.

I'm not suggesting (obviously) that you try to serve your videos from youtube - Just find out what settings they recommend :)

That is indeed an excellent idea! A friend recommended I try something similar with Amazon's Cloud but I like the YouTube idea better. :)

Thanks mate!

Great idea. How do I download it once its converted?

Forget this part - See the vid below - it still works this way

This is how I USED to do it... :2 cents:

For FHD, CRF 20 it if the camera doesn't move around too much. 5000kbit CBR should be fine if the camera remains active. You want quality, but you don't want file sizes that just get too unwieldy for your users to access.

Consider the 4GB file size limit with FAT32, when finding a balance between quality and file size. Not all of your members are using NTFS.

FF has a few extensions that work well with downloading from Youtube. FVD has worked well for me over the years.

No need. You can do it within the youtube interface itself, just like the video shows that I posted above

I think most of the world now has the ability to download or stream reasonable bandwidth and speeds. Iīm here in Spain, weīre nearly up to 100mb download if we want it, and can assure most services are higher in other countries.

The harddrive & server space shouldnīt also be a major problem as the cost of these are so low now, however, itīs the simple fact of not wanting to waste peoples time and the space when no need. So other than trying CSīs idea, maybe take one of your own vids, half the bitrate and see if you would be happy watching it, if so, stock to that, so maybe 4 on full 1080p HD & 3 on 720p, I canīt see it making a huge difference, apart from the fast action, hand movements, maybe close ups on dick and pussy fucking or toy fucking again, with the fast movements.

Let us know how it goes if you try CSīs idea on YT :thumbsup

I see now. This only works if I was the person who uploaded the video. That tip will come in handy for me down the road. Thanks for the info

There is no one size fits all if you understand how H.264 and H.265 codecs work its obvious. Fast moving video with a lot of cuts and or video with fine detail like lots of leaves, ripples on water or bands of contrasting color require a higher bitrate, videos with fewer cuts and less "action" can look very well at low bitrates, cartoons are an even different thing entirely. I have found that most porn will look really good at 4mbs bitrates IF you use the H.264/265 "high" profiles if your video is more Dark Brothers style with MTV old school fast cuts , smash cuts and 1 to 2 second shots you will need to tweak it up....and always use an external monitor so you know what it looks like on an HDTV because I assure you it looks very very different on your 75 inch HDTV than it does on your 17 inch laptop screen.
