Elon Musk sides with Trump on trade with China

Elon Musk sides with Trump on trade with China, citing 25% import duty on American cars. Elon Musk believes China isn't playing fair in the car trade with the U.S.

The auto executive says the Asian country puts a 25 percent import duty on American cars, while the U.S. only does 2.5 percent for Chinese cars in return.

"I am against import duties in general, but the current rules make things very difficult. It's like competing in an Olympic race wearing lead shoes," Musk tweets.

Tesla's Elon Musk is complaining to President Donald Trump about China's car tariffs.

"Do you think the US & China should have equal & fair rules for cars? Meaning, same import duties, ownership constraints & other factors," Musk said on Twitter in response to a Trump tweet about trade with China. "I am against import duties in general, but the current rules make things very difficult. It's like competing in an Olympic race wearing lead shoes."

The auto executive said China puts a 25 percent import duty on American cars, while the U.S. only does 2.5 percent for Chinese cars. He added that no American car company is "allowed to own even 50% of their own factory" in the Asian country, but China's auto firms can own their companies in the U.S.

Trump responded to Musk's tweets later at his steel and aluminum tariff press conference Thursday.

"We are going to be doing a reciprocal tax program at some point, so that if China is going to charge us 25% or if India is going to charge us 75% and we charge them nothing ... We're going to be at those same numbers. It's called reciprocal, a mirror tax," Trump said after reading Musk's earlier tweets out loud.

The Trump administration has also asked Beijing for a $100 billion reduction in the U.S. trade deficit with the Asian country, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the talks.

Take your own advice

pimpmaster9000 03-10-2018 02:28 AM

uncompetitive economies do not get to set the rules and they do not get fair deals...red hats do not understand this...let me explain this as simple as I can:

a fat ugly guy (uncompetitive economy) does not get paid by the smoking hot woman (competitive economy) for sex...the fat guy does not even get the sex for free....the fat guy does not even get the sex cheap...he gets to pay out of the ass and then only gets to eat her ass and he gets no blow job or sex...

nobody is to blame but the fat guy...he wants hot chicks and does not want to bang fat asteroids like himself...

the fat guy has 2 choices:
1) settle for free sex with fat asteroids
2) keep paying out of the ass

there is no scenario where the fat guy gets the smoking hot chick for free...I can not explain this any simpler...if you do not get it you never will...

but you know a lot, right ?

so maybe you also know that this happend before in 2002 ?

and maybe you also know that it caused the lost of 200.000 jobs and 4 billion in wages in just 10 month?

and maybe you also know that in whole USA are just 140.000 jobs in producing steel but
6,5 million jobs in steel processing, do you ?

so the maths is simple.
maybe trump creates 100.000 jobs more in steel manufactoring and this 100.000 will be a part of the 1 million who will lose their job in steel processing.

now letīs go a bit further and say that 50% of the products what are produced with american steel are for the export market (in real it is more than that) your country will not be able to deliver on competitive prices and even more jobs will be lost.

i think you need to swallow this bitter pill once to understand the complexity of the international trade market.
you need cheap imports and cheap workers more than any other country in the world.

if trump would be able to go on with his stupid ideas might create new jobs in the headhunting biz what tries to get the mexicans back by paying them a premium

"Spoke to PM @TurnbullMalcolm of Australia. He is committed to having a very fair and reciprocal military and trade relationship. Working very quickly on a security agreement so we don’t have to impose steel or aluminum tariffs on our ally, the great nation of Australia!"

First its spelt "aluminium"

Secondly he's yet to fucking realise the USA has a trade surplus with Australia not the other way around. He cancelled TPP costing the USA billions in lost sales here, and then he turned around and threatened this tariff, after twice saying to our Prime minister he wouldn't.

The military deal was signed under Obama, and Australia told Trump last week if he imposed tariffs the deal was off.. NOT TRUMP

Trumps a fuckign bozo

Sure there are areas where the Chinese need an ass kick and Elons plea is fair, but steel.. USA uses already 70% locally made product, only 2% is Imported from China

Meanwhile TTP 2 was signed last week with Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

Acepimp 03-10-2018 04:11 PM

The TPP was a massive scam designed to enrich foreign banks and companies while killing US jobs. Anyone who supported the TPP is greedy scumbag or a moron,

Also, Obama and McCain were intentionally importing inferior steel, while causing US steel plants to close down.

Inferior Steel Entering the U.S. Was Addressed Prior to Trump - But Without Success.

2% of market share didn't cause your steel mills to close down.

China does not have just "inferior steel" they have all grades but what the USA wanted was.. cheap stuff and that's what they are sent. The USA produces 70% of all steel the country needs. ANYONE who builds a project can use American made or Cheap Chinese stuff and I bet there is also cheap American inferior steel, you get what you pay for. Thankfully in the USA its only the very few swindling companies like... "TRUMP INC" that use it.. you know the fraudulent 2%.

TTP2 now is in process without the USA and I'll tell you one of the first actions TTP2 will make.. no Tariffs on any partners or we will throw tariffs on American products. Its fucking fate that TTP was to fight the Chinese and now its going to be used to fight the USA. sad really.

Your hatred of the USA is blinding you of the sheer buying power we have.

Look at these trade imbalances:

China - $636 billion traded with a $375 billion deficit.
Canada - $582 billion traded with an $18 billion deficit.
Mexico - $557 billion traded with a $71 billion deficit.
Japan - $204 billion traded with a $69 billion deficit.
Germany - $171 billion traded with a $65 billion deficit.

Do you understand just about every country we trade with we have a deficit?

Europe did the same a few months ago to protect European steel companies.
Nobody cared. Trump does it and the economy will fall down and the moon wil fall on the earth.
Trump Bad, Europe Good.

In the mean time the environment will profit more from it than that whole Paris Climate agreement.
The car industry in Germany is already begging for Merkel's support.
You know, the criminals that uses fraudulent software in cars to make them look more 'green' and that way steal taxpayers money.

"BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union has set import duties on Chinese corrosion-resistant steel to counter what it says are unfairly low prices, the latest in a series of measures against Chinese products and steel in particular.

The duties will range from 17.2 to 27.9 percent, very similar to the tariffs already set on a provisional basis in August, the EU official journal said on Thursday. "

obviously you are not able to produce the same quality for the same price - if so nobody would need to import it.

and possibly you never asked where the surplus (with the countries you have one) would be if you could not import from countries for a cheap price.

this deficits are ruled by the markets.
no goverment is ordering goods - the companies do that - and they do it because it makes them able to produce on a price where they can be competitive on EXPORTS.

example: if you order 1 million mercedes benz in germany because the US market wants them - there is no reason for germany to import 1 million chryslers for that when the market does not want them.

with other words: a country IMPORTS what they need and what the other country do better.

you fucking deficit is based on your crazy system - thatīs all.

i will tell you how this is done and WHY it can not be stopped:

1. company XXX imports 1 million tonns of steel from china.
2. company XXX produces 5000 machines from that for the export market
3. company XXX exports the 5000 machines on a cheap price to itīs daughter company
in singapore.
4. the daughter company sells it on a much higher price to china and the money will stay in singapure

and BANG!!!! you have a deficit with china !!!

now lets have a look what happens when the steel from china will be too expensive:

1. company XXX buys 100.000 tonns of stell from US
2. company XXX produces 500 machines for the US market (because they will not be able to sell it to anybody)
3. for a 10% production company XXX needs only 10% of the workers - 90% will be fired
4. the doughter company in singapore will be closed but as china needs the machines they will order it somewhere else - and they EXPORTS this steel to some other countries
where company XYZ will do this job and create a lot of new jobs.

but why i explain you that?
you will not understand this basic rules anyway.
keep on dreaming !!!

ahhhh - and by the way - do you know how your deficit with canada works?

because a lot of american and canadian companies are buying stuff together.

if the joint imports of both countries entering US first the are calculated to the US imports from the country they came from - even when they are straight delivered to Canada.

if those imports are entering Canada first and are delivered to USA they will be calculated as imports from Canada.

so before you write nonsense (or go to vote for a monkey) make yourself smart (if there is any chance for that).

you seem to be familiar with this small dick problem - wonder what you searched when you found this site.

and btw. i am not hateful - i just hate when people who do not have the smallest clue of what they are talking about try to make wise statements.

i donīt know how someone who was spending years in university (like i did) to understand something would ever need to go to study when an old fart who never reached more than a coal worker-income know it better.

can you give me an answer on that?

you guys get all you type either from the beer bar or from google one moment before you write it. but that does not mean that you understand anything. you just copied the statement from someone who did the same a few month before.

he does not agree at all with trump.
he just want to produce cars IN CHINA and does not want to give the majority of the company to chinese partners (what is usual all over asia).

the problem is that this dicussion is based on beer bar paroles and not on reality.
amercia needs the chinese steel imports to sell the produced goods all over the planet (and not to china).

by not importing this steel from china US producers have to deal with MUCH higher prices because costs and wins are based on % calculation.

so if a company calculates a win of 50% on top of the costs and the production of the good was 100 dollar before it was sold for 150 dollar.
if the same production is now 125 dollar it must be sold for 187,50 what is a huge difference in the world market.

when this export companies want to survive on the world market with a competitive price they have a few choices

1. bring the company to another country where they can produce and import the steel cheap - result ALL JOBS will go
2. automize as much as possible and get rid of human workers - result: many jobs will go
3. concentrate on the local market, produce less and sell expensive - result: less production and less jobs - higher costs for the locals - decrease of prosperity

i wonder wich solution our smart trump supporters will choose.
