We are what is called "full employment". This means everyone who wants to be employed is employed, although a certain percentage will always be "between jobs". When this happens the job market changes, and employees are harder to find. Wages go up.

There are more jobs than people.. There is currently around 100k construction jobs that need filled which is hampering new home construction.

When I lived in Los Angeles in the mid to late 90's there was a 6 month period of time where I was working a job that wasn't that far away from me. It was about 6-8 miles total drive, but because of where I had to go (the 405 was involved here) and the time of day I had to go there, it was about 90 minutes each way every day.

Spending 3 hours in traffic every day will kill your will to live pretty quickly.
