South Carolina Republican tried to enlist white supremacists to murder black neighbor, charges say
A Greenwood County man is facing federal charges after authorities said he reached out to a white supremacist group for help with a plot to kill his black neighbor.
Brandon Cory Lecroy, a 25-year-old Hodges resident, was indicted on charges of solicitation to commit a crime of violence and use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder for hire, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.
Authorities said Lecroy, who is white, wanted his neighbor, who is black, dead.
If convicted, Lecroy would face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
Court documents described the alleged plot.
FBI agents started investigating after a confidential source reported Lecroy contacted a white supremacist extremist organization "to seek assistance with the murder of his African-American neighbor," according to a criminal complaint.
After the tip came in, an undercover agent on March 20 spoke with Lecroy, who made arrangements to pay for his neighbor's murder, the complaint stated.
Lecroy told the agent during a phone call: "$500 and he's a ghost," according to the complaint.
He asked the agent to put a "flaming cross" in the front yard and "hang his neighbor from a tree," the records added.
Lecroy and the undercover agent spoke again two days later, the complaint stated. He told the agent that he wanted to get a 9 mm handgun with two magazines and that he wanted a "ghost gun" that was untraceable but not stolen.
"Lecroy also advised (the agent) that he has more jobs for him in the future," the complaint stated.
On April 9, Lecroy met with the undercover agent, pointed out his neighbor's residence and made a $100 down payment in cash "with acknowledgement that this payment was for the murder of his neighbor," the documents stated. They also discussed "future targets," the records added.
He was arrested that day. He had not been arrested before in South Carolina, according to State Law Enforcement Division records.
A federal judge later ordered a psychiatric examination. Lecroy was being held Tuesday at a federal prison hospital in Massachusetts.
