South Carolina passes law deeming any criticism of Israel in school as anti-semitic
 

Civil rights activists are opposing the passage of a bill that equates criticism of Israeli policies with anti-Semitism in the US state of South Carolina.

The new bill would effectively deem any criticism of Israel in publicly funded schools and state colleges as "anti-Semitic".

Unable to pass it as a standalone law for the past two years over questions about its constitutionality, supporters of the measure used a legislative tactic known as a "rider" to insert it into the state's 2018-2019 budget. The measure will expire after one year.

Supporters of Israel see the controversial bill as a triumph, arguing that any criticism of Israel is inherently anti-Semitic and should be banned on college campuses.

Opponents argue the bill is politically motivated and has nothing to do with the actual issue of anti-Semitism. They argue the law will instil fear in academic circles and create self-censorship among professors and students who will be reluctant to include Israel in political discussions.......

I'm torn on this. While it makes sense, if we criticize Russia, do we hate all Russians? If I criticize Ireland, do I hate Catholics? Iraq, Iran, Muslims, etc.

It's too broad. Not everyone in Israel is Jewish. I've criticized Israel over political decisions because I do t agree with policy. It has nothing to do with religion.

Sorry; but it makes no fucking sense at all to live in a country that allows free speech about

I never once defended shooting of Palestinians or other people claiming Israel as their own. The war over the land will never end. Each side thinks they have a right to it.

South Carolina evokes memories of the KKK, public lynching of innocent blacks, and anti-Semitism. I was taught that 30+ years ago in school. South Carolina making it a law is fine IF they do the same for the N word, Africans, fat rich morons (Trump) and so on.

Everyone in Israel isn’t Jewish. To equate anti-Israel with anti-semitism is just ludicrous. Iran isn’t all Muslim. Ireland isn’t all catholic.

If the Olympics can have skiers from Trinidad & Tobago, Israel can have Christians. 😉 (for the yungins, that’s true. Two guys from a sunny, no-snow climate competed in skiing in the Olympics. People thought it was a joke, I’ve read, because you don’t see snow there and rarely see black skiers. They’re out there but society can’t believe black folks can afford ski lessons, let alone equipment and travel.).

Free speech is fine if you’re not attacking people. You have the right to say what you want but you can’t incite problems.

But hating Israel isn’t anti-Semitic, though the hater may feel that way. Interpretation differs among people.
