My friends have left. They live here in the states now. They describe how everyone is grumpy all the time. Corruption is rampant. The most recent one came two years ago and love it here. So maybe the last two years have seen nice changes. I just know he hated Moscow and couldn’t wait to leave.

This is all second hand info from people who have left. Obviously, those who live there have a reason to stay. I can see where my data points are skewed. They are just so adamant about it.

The States are not better than Russia at all. It's not so cold of course so there is a better climate and better roads, but there are hurricanes and other disasters that literally smash out the paper houses the most Americans are used to live in. Just go out of NYC/Boston/Chicago and look how the regular citizen lives in the States. No need to visit Louisiana or Arkansas. Even in Vegas, just go off the Strip and look around.

P.S. I've been to many places and Moscow is the best one I know (and not from some second hand like you). Yes, there is a lot of corruption (if you don't want to give a bribe, just don't suggest it like me - I never did that for all my life), but there is no stupid restrictions like in the USA (this you can't, that you don't, etc...), no crazy taxes, the women here are real hot, the police here - yes, it's corrupted, but it doesn't shoot at your pets and at you for no reason, there are no paper houses, no hurricanes and no Dorothy with Toto.

I googled one of the cities where my buddy (who is originally from Iceland) is going and oh my fucking Odin. First of all, they are staying in some rundown apartments with wall rugs and wooden chairs. Seriously, it looks like 1920's rural Norway in black and white films. They are not grumpy. Smiling for no reason is not polite, it's hypocrisy when someone smiles out of politness and asking you like "hi how are you" while you don't really care. there are hundreds of places where smiling in the public is very rare, not only Russia.
They smile only to their friends and close people. once you make a Russian friend you gonna be sure this is the best friend ever, because when they ask "how are you" - they really care and willing to help you out if something is wrong.
