Likely 4,600+ dead in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria

Damn.

That's staggering.

To put it into perspective, about 3,000 died in the 9/11 attacks.

At a bit of a loss of words. . .

Good thing Trump's Homeland Securty Inspector General decided to stop having FEMA do critiques of their initial disaster responses. Drain the swamp - into Trump administration leadership roles.

To me, this is a catastrophic failure on the Trump Administration. Many of these people (most of them in fact) died in the aftermath of the hurricane. Trump got his photo op and then turned his back on them.

I'm sure there is plenty of blame to go around for officials in Puerto Rico, but the buck stops at the President's desk.

What is, to me, the worst part of the story you posted about the administration's new policy is that they will not learn from this if they don't look at themselves and critique what they did wrong.

What we really need to do is make PR a state. Guam too. This is long over due really.

I agree. They are US citizens already. We should make it offical.

Shocking, one thing I know, when there is a natural disaster, have your finances in order..

Did the Harvard study ever taken into account, the possibility that since the last census study taken in 2010, then many of 4000 + claimed to be unaccounted for, simply traveled out of PR since 2010, and simply never returned?

There has to be an answer. There is no fucking chance that for over a year or however long it's been the total has been 70 times higher and families and people in PR were not the ones who brought this up. We would have heard of it being 4000+ I don't know what it is thats been found, but there is more than meets the eye

In short, yes. My understanding is that they went out and interviewed a ton of people and asked about what has happened since the hurricane. I'm sure there are some people who moved away and never came back or who left and people might think are dead, but it sounds like the researchers had boots on the ground and were talking to actual people. They admit the number they came up with likely isn't exact, but they feel it is likely very close.
