Supreme Court backs Christian baker who spurned gay couple

The justices, in a 7-2 decision, said the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed an impermissible hostility toward religion when it found that baker Jack Phillips violated the state's anti-discrimination law by rebuffing gay couple David Mullins and Charlie Craig in 2012. The state law bars businesses from refusing service based on race, sex, marital status or sexual orientation.

The ruling concluded that the commission violated Phillips' religious rights under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.

BTW 7-2 is not "narrowly" unless you're a liberal who thinks everyone deserves a trophy :1orglaugh

The very first sentence of the politicle article you copy/pasted:

"The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday handed a victory on narrow grounds to a Colorado Christian baker who refused for religious reasons to make a wedding cake for a gay couple, stopping short of setting a major precedent allowing people to claim exemptions from anti-discrimination laws based on religious beliefs."

You're not American and English is your second language and again you show your ignorance of the English language, American court system and knowledge of the contents of the very political article you copy pasted on a porn industry forum.

What the lady is trying to tell you is that the decision wasn't narrow in the number of votes, it was narrow regarding the scope of the decision.

That's the primary argument... It was his right to decline to bake the cake based on his beliefs... And the commission "hostilely" went after him for it.. They narrowed the scope to the primary constitutional issue. The end...

That is not what has been decided in that case, my friend. The broader religious liberty issue that some may have been wanting or expecting was not addressed. This was more procedural than anything else.

What a dumb case, anyway.

bronco67 06-04-2018 01:12 PM

Have to side with the bakers on this one. No business should be forced to serve anyone they don't want to serve. Why would a gay couple want a cake from someone who didn't put their heart and soul into the work because of their religious belief?

That said, whatever consequences come to the bakery for discrimination is totally on them. But it's a problem for the market to sort out, not the government.

"The ruling concluded that the commission violated Phillips' religious rights under the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment."

They were just playing it safe by narrowing the scope. The decision fits the broader scope they just don't want to address it. Even whacked out liberals know deep down it's true.. Wasn't there a thing about some "nazi's" or whatever being kicked out of a coffee shop recently? Imagine if they made the decision those nazi's could stay and that liberal coffee shop couldn't say shit about it?

But I agree, dumb case because of liberal whining.

Well, I can't speak for what SC Justices' intend or want to address - but in this case, they did not decide all baker's get to choose whether or not to make gay wedding cakes.

While I don't think anyone should be forced to make cakes, it's a damn slippery slope. :helpme

I feel bad for the baker. He's excluding good people and good business, just because he won't consider other ideas. This is his loss, not the couples.

Of course not, that's not how virtue signaling works.

As usual, they'd quietly ignore that conversation and all the obvious contradictions which would arise in any cursory examination of the conflicting viewpoints.

... just as they get status among their peers for pretending to care, they can also lose status among for caring in the wrong way about the wrong things and at the wrong time.

Pretending to care is a very fine line to walk.

See, the funny thing about Pam is that she's constantly railing on here against white people discriminating against blacks, yet when it came time for pam to move she had 4 or 5 choices...

I know the areas well that she had to choose from...

diverse city
diverse city
diverse city
diverse city
literally 99.1% white town.

Take a guess where virtue signaling pam moved to lol

Oh and if you want another laugh, factor in her choice of residence and then look at her sig...

Though the term is relatively new... it's basic evolutionary biology. Your brain is not wired to be honest, your brain is wired to protect reputation. This is a long discussion... but think about it like this.

We are a cooperative species and we have to deal with both individual selection and group selection. For example, though this is obviously going to trigger a "that must be bullshit" response, primates are not a cooperative species. Meaning if two chimps must work together to move a log so that they may all escape a fire, they can't do it. Humans are cooperative. The better we cooperate as a group/tribe, the greater our chances of survival... whether we're talking Jamestown in that first year, way back when or a band of 50 hunter / gatherers 10,000 years ago. Within the group, there is one trait more important that all others. That is that you have a good reputation. So think about this carefully... who is more likely to survive...

1) the guy who is thought by the group to be dishonest but never steals
2) the guy who always steals but its believed by the group to be honest

"Caring" is very similar.
Being believed to care about others elevates your status in the group
Being believed to not care makes you a liability to the group

That perception of "caring" gives them status within the group. It doesn't need to be genuine. It is still status in the group (the Left). If you notice, they never actually do anything to demonstrate that they care.... they just continually announce to the world and their peers that they care and conveniently attack you for "not caring" which again elevates their status in their group as well as their perceived level of "concern".

How do they demonstrate that they care? Well... what do they do? Nothing. I mean, "nothing" but run around screaming how much they care and you don't care.

Do they do anything of substance? Of course not. DId ********** buy a Volt because he "cares"? If that was the case, he wouldn't have created between 4-10 threads a week about it for a couple years. Did he buy it for "status" among his peers? Well, if that is the intent, you definitely have to make it known, right?

Did ********** ditch his Camero for a Chevy Volt (i.e. vagina on wheels) because he authentically cares? Well,.... he spent many years telling us about it, so...

HairyChick 06-05-2018 06:47 PM

Christ, I missed a lot due to ignore. But, it’s discrimination and it’s wrong. He didn’t believe in gay marriage. If one of y’all ordered a GFY cake, and he refused, would you be upset? If you had a big boob site and wanted a cake with huge boobs for an industry party, and he refused on the grounds he doesn’t do sexual content... would you feel the same?

I think the baker was wrong. But I agree with the poster who said it should be local, not a federal decision.

Feel free to scream and yell and call childish names. I’ll sleep fine tonight, believing the baker was wrong. I guarantee if it a black/ white issue, you’d be all over the baker. Not all, some of you’d agree depending on the op.

Business is business. Why care about content ? Hire an open-minded helper so you’re not offended.

I got a pm telling me they hope I’m up all night over this. I just laughed. My life is complicated enough; worrying about anonymous posters isn’t going to happen You disagree, so be it

Do I agree with federal law? Yes and no. Discrimination is wrong but it depends how it’s worded “I’m sorry but homosexuality is against my religion” is passable, but “faggots aren’t welcome, take your AIDS out of here” is clearly wrong IMHO.

I don’t understand the second paragraph so fix it and if needed I’ll respond. You’re getting angry over an opinion that differs from yours.

Most likely, I would too. My money and I go elsewhere if y’all don’t want my business. This happened when a printer refused to publish my magazine. R-rated photos but he said no, and I knew him well. He did $20k in business from my former job per year. I convinced my former boss to go elsewhere. Found a printer in Providence willing to do it with no issues.

But, I’d not consider suing anyone over it. It’s his right to say no nicely. Had he said, “those skanky hairy bitches are nasty” I’d have considered a lawyer. I had a customer who was an attorney so minimal fees. Would I spend $30k for an attorney? Nope. Not unless id get $200k!

The Porn Nerd 06-06-2018 07:14 PM

Great, so where will I get my Donald Trump cock cake made now? I have a party this weekend!!

Edit: Actually, the baker would probably jump at the chance to touch Trump's cock, seeing absolutely no irony in the action whatsoever. :D

Fucking stupid analogy. A baker bakes cakes and refuses to bake one for a gay couple. You think this is the same as "a caterer that specializes in Muslim events/foods", that won't have pork on their menu, refusing to make you a pig roast?

What's your next analogy? "Oh and what if you go to ToysRUs and they refuse to sell you a welding torch?"
