Star Trek: The Next Generation

I finished watching this show a few months back and it was a pleasure from start until end. I was completely hooked and it was a bit sad to leave the cast after 7 seasons. (GEEK meltdown :1orglaugh). I'm thinking of continuing with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine or Star Trek: Voyager, they don't exist on bluray unfortunately and according to the internet they wont get released within the next years in this format.

When did you watch star trek: TNG and did you enjoy it as much as me?

Do any of you own ds9 or voyager on dvd, are they worth getting and what is your verdict of those?

BaldBastard 06-24-2018 09:51 PM

I followed and loved TNG for years, bit dated now but still the best. Of the spin off's none really captured me however Discovery has

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5171438/

season 2 up soon so a good time to watch season one.

BTW: Picard is possibly making a return!

Hi Drax,

I love Star Trek and enjoyed TNG. Voyager had some great episodes, but the portrayal of the Captain bugged me a little. I tried DS9 but couldn't get into it. Star Trek: Enterprise had some great episodes too but fan reaction was mixed. If I had to watch any of them again though, it would be Star Trek: Enterprise. You can see it now on Netflix.

Try watching The Orville too. It's a Seth MacFarlane show. It is very, very Star Trek, with countless nods to the show and lots of ST Cameos, and yet it's not Star Trek. It's actually alot better than the brand new Star Trek. I didn't care much for the first Orville episode, but I was hooked by the 3rd. Worth watching.

TNG was truly great. The remasters have given them new life. It was a shame they shut down TNG production after 7 seasons to focus on Deep Space 9. It had the ratings and legs to go longer. I never got into the subsequent series as much as TNG.

femdomdestiny 06-25-2018 03:02 AM

I am just in process of watching Voyager, again. Basically, I could watch Star Trek and be doing it every 5 years or so.

Deep space nine is too static for my taste, Enterprise was the best but fans didn't like it. Star Trek Discovery is ok, I just can't handle new look of Klingons. Anyway, if you are discovering TNG now, you should go step by step, watching everything chronologically.

I tried one of the older TV series but didn't like it, I did like the new ones in the theaters..

TOS is hard to watch from today's perspective. It has been many decades. Even remastered stuff is pretty boring.

Rochard 06-25-2018 10:19 PM

TNG was okay.

Kind of unrelated but... Today I finished watching Friends from start to finish. I know how you felt when you got the end of TNG - Once you are invested in a show you don't want it to end.

Finished all 4 seasons of star trek: enterprise and it kept me well entertained throughout the series. I felt 3 was the best and perhabs 2 and 4 as runner up. I'd watch it again.

Orville was okay, it's kind of star trek with added silliness but compared with star trek I'm not hooked the same way.

Remember watching a few voyager episodes back in the days but far from all of them. I'm therefor highly motivated to dive into the voyager series. The star trek geek in me wants! :1orglaugh

I have to agree with you, TOS is for me the only series that just doesn't catch up to the standard of the other series. It's indeed boring and contain strange far fetched plots but also reveals which is interesting how "we" looked upon space and sci-fi in the 60's.

newB 06-26-2018 09:41 AM

It's quite a coincidence to see this as I just recently watched the pilot for Deep Space Nine and also a Voyager episode.

I never really got into DS9, and re-watching the pilot just confirmed it.

Back when Voyager was on, Seven of Nine was a part of the appeal. Watching it now that I'm older, I can now appreciate Captain Janeway.

I enjoyed Enterprise and have so far enjoyed Discovery, but I think the appeal for them has more to do with their each telling chronological larger stories as opposed to the episodic vignettes of their predecessors.

Orville has been OK. Reminiscent of the original Star Trek series, but the humor feels a little forced, but is especially ham-fisted with the social commentary.

My favourite episode of Enterprise is "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part 1". To me this was outstanding Science Fiction and outstanding Trek as it had everything: Time Travel, Alternative Universe, A call-back to TOS, evil sexyness, a visit to a TOS bridge, and good acting. The actors looked like they had alot of fun playing their evil counterparts. PT2 of this story was OK but I could watch PT again and again.

"In a Mirror, Darkly, Part 1"

Enjoy :)

Ideally, Star Trek should be watched by chronology because many things are interlinked, mentioned and linked to the previous series. It is more interesting to watch it that way.

I remember that some foreign friends were downloading episodes because they had a faster connection back then and they were sending me CDs by mail :) 740mb CD :) It was even better that way, was feeling special.

I was trying to watch it multiple times and was extremely boring. I am aware that I am doing it not so much for fun but because of thing you mentioned above and like a cultural heritage. Still, I didn't make it.

Looking back at the original Star Trek after all these years makes me wonder why i thought it was so great. The effects have come so far it makes the original look more like a cartoon series ?

I used to love Voyager. 7of 9 being the biggest draw for me, To this day one of the sexiest outfits ever made for a sci-fi series.

I expect in 20 years special effects will have made a quantum leap in reality and holographic TVs will be an immersive everyday experience :2 cents:

ianmoone332000 06-26-2018 02:41 PM

My dad is a massive star trek fan so i grew up watching them all and the next generation was the best. The borg storyline was probably my favorite time of the show. Especially when they assimilated piccard

For me today, TOS still holds up and the original effects are not a distraction to me at all. There is a new version of TOS with the visual effects re-made in CG, but with the original look-and-feel. It looks like 60's effects only better, and it looks great. I think the new TOS with new VFX is still available on Netflix.

I haven't had the chance to watch the latest series yet, checked out your trailer though. One thing that puts me off a bit is the high-5'ing, is that the crew of the ship?

Why is it, that in every damn series there has to be someone doing that. Sigh, high five doesn't feel star trek. Did they ever do that in any of the classic series?

Yes, a crew of the ship. Maybe it is done with the purpose because the girl doing it is a cadet, new to serving on the ship and she is playing an ordinary girl, more like a confused person because she is a newbie.

Perhabs you're right, though the others should have looked at her with displease, audience would have loved it and it would all be star trek approved. :)

I’m rewatching voyager for a 3rd time RN actually. Just finished ds9 for a 3rd time. Tng is awesome, but jt really gets good after roddenbery passed away. Basically all the silly stuff, hissing ferangi, wesley crusher, and characters never being grey like on ds9/voyager. Post roddenberry tng is awesome

cybermike 07-22-2018 08:31 AM

I'm on a rewatch for TNG as well on netflix.. so good.. had to skip a bunch in the earlier seasons.. bunch of handy guides online on which ones are worth skipping over.

So what's your verdict for ds9 and voyager, anything you can add?

I assume after watching both a 3rd time it's something you definitely enjoy, how does it hold up compared with TNG ?

There are alot worth skipping, but of course this goes to your taste. Personally, I hate every episode with the "Q" character. I know he was popular but I just found him ridiculous and as he is kind of a God, it kind of made everything the crew of the Enterprise ever did pointless.

I love time travel in sci-fi, so my favourites are ones involving time travel. Unfortunately, the best episode of Star Trek is "All good things..." which is (a) time travel and (b) the last episode of the series, also features Q. FUCK.

Anyway, enjoy!

Same here. Q stuff is so stupid and makes me feel that everything is useless. Same applies to Voyager where Q is appearing.

Grew up with TNG. Holds a special place in my heart.

I never watched a single episode of Enterprise, I feel like I missed out? Voyager turned me off star trek and then I stopped watching TV for like a decade.

I haven't been watching "Discovery". I'm not about to pay for yet another service just to watch one TV show. I am just gonna wait until the entire series is over and then I'll sign up for a month or two and binge watch it all.

It does look good though.

Yep, that was the first thing I did, searched for a fresh video to see in what shape he is in his age. Because last time I saw him was in https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3315342/?ref_=nm_knf_i2 and he looked terrible. It seems it was just a role.

Second, I've thought he will talk too much crap as most of the old people but I was wrong.

So all good, Shatner is alive and kicking and it is 10 years older
