I haven't looked into it but a friend of mine told me that it actually takes more energy and resources to create paper straws than plastic straws. That doesn't eliminate the biodegradable effect of course. I'm curious if we can create biodegradable plastic straws and meld the 2 issues?

There is another issue that is not talked about… Some people cannot use paper straws. They do not bend. Many people with disabilities need bendable straws in order to drink from restaurant glasses, fast food glasses and even glasses at home.

Until a better solution is found, why not offer both? Paper straws for the "eco-conscience" and plastic straws for those that need it.

Even worse, Starbucks has gone environmentally friendly with their paper straws, then packaged them in even more plastic. Possibly the dumbest things I have ever seen.

A minut fraction of the people get plastic syringes for illegal drugs than do the hundreds if millions that use straws for sucking liquids every day.

Starting somewhere is better than not starting at all. There's so much uneeded waste in Western society and it makes no sense to create a one use item that floats in the ocean for decades or doesn't decompose underground for even longer.

I love how people are losing their shit over this, but are totally cool with a burqa ban.

I'm confused how you can relate burqas to plastic straws but that's okay. For the record I support the ban of plastic straws. I am also against giving out free hypodermic needles and crack pipes to support the destruction of homeless people's lifes.
