Do you think e-Verify will really have a dent on migration to the US?

If the government put the pressure on BUSINESSES instead of the migrants themselves through MANDATORY e-verify, what impact (if any) would it have on undocumented immigrants?

Wouldn't people hellbent on hiring cheaper labor do it anyway?

I am sure it is helping, but it's just too easy to pay people under the table.

You may be right. It's kind of like the WAR ON DRUGS... as long as it is economically FEASIBLE, people WILL find a way around

do you even know why they target the illegals?? because they are the weakest link!

What most of you likely do not realize is that the e-Verify platform has been around for decades. Do you know who is against using it? American employers! The US Chamber of Commerce on behalf of its business members actively campaigns against using it.

Wonder why?

No matter what system is created, people create ways to beat it.

:2 cents:

One of my friends - in fact, the man who taught me how to build computers - was a medic in Vietnam. He is black, and when he came back from Vietnam it was a disaster. He had a lot of mental problems from what he saw (He was a medic with the US Marines in Vietnam), was part of the US military which was looked down at directly after Vietnam, and he was black. He had problems, couldn't find work, his wife left him, took his child with her, and then to add injury to insult they expected him to pay child support. At some point he just said "fuck this" and went underground, working for the same gas station for thirty years.

Looking back at it, the entire story is amazing. He went thirty years without a driver's license, without owning a house, without ever having been on someone's lease. He worked under the table at the gas station, and then did side jobs building computers (back before you could buy a computer).

True. The agriculture and construction industries in this country rely heavily on illegal immigrant labor and those industries don't want to do anything that will interrupt that flow of cheap labor.

Therein is the issue. I live in a small town outside of Portland. We have a lot of farms in the area so there are a lot of immigrant workers in the area as well. We have two kinds of farms. There are the ones that pay minimum wage but can't find anyone to do the job and there are those that pay piecemeal so you get paid based on how much pick/harvest that day. Those jobs pay better if you are a hard worker, but they still can't get locals to do the job.

Just yesterday I drove past a farm that had about 50 people sitting next to the road eating lunch while taking a break from work. The only non-Latino people present were the supervisors/bosses. I'm confident most of those people are here illegally.

We could end the immigration problem easily. Go hard after companies that hire them and end the anchor baby policy. With that, no doubt, would also come an increase in housing costs and the cost of many foods.

They can't find anyone at the wages they pay. No worries they will have to buy machines to pick the crops. https://www.google.com/search?source....0.eFis_rJZosU
