Woman fired for saying she ‘hates f*cking Mexicans’ loses unemployment bid where she claimed Trump normalized such workplace talk

An Iowa woman fired for saying she “hates f*cking Mexicans” claimed such talk has been normalized in her workplace since Donald Trump was elected — but won’t be able to get unemployment benefits because of it.

According to Des Moines Register, the Iowa Employment Appeals Board reversed an earlier decision granting Angela Diers unemployment because the comments met the state’s definition of misconduct.

Previously, Administrative Law Judge Beth Scheetz said that Dexter Laundry, Diers’ former employer, could not “single out” the woman for misconduct because “since President Trump’s election, it was common for workers” at that workplace to disparage black and Latino people.

Scheetz’s earlier decision came after Diers argued that many of her coworkers made derogatory comments about “blacks and foreigners.” She was fired for making the comments after getting angry about a coworker “dancing and singing Mexican” the day before Cinco de Mayo at work.

“It was 7 o’clock in the morning, or 6:30 in the morning, and here’s Lindsey, dancing and singing Mexican … It’s, like, ‘What are you doing?’ And then she said something about Cinco de Mayo,” Diers testified. “And that’s when I said I hated Mexicans.”

She went on to clarify that she only disliked “illegal Mexicans.”

“We talk about everything out on the floor — whether it’s the president or the vice president,” the woman testified before the administrative law judge. “There has been talk on the floor: Some people don’t like blacks, certain people don’t like Mexicans, certain people don’t like foreigners. We talk, and then we just move on.”

In her now-overturned ruling, Scheetz wrote that “if management wishes all workers to be treated with respect, it must enforce respectful treatment amongst co-workers and supervisors, and apply those expectations consistently throughout the chain of command.”

In its reversal, the employment appeals board said Diers’ “comments fell squarely within the type of behavior the employer’s work rules specifically prohibit.”

“Her clarification that she only meant ‘illegal’ Mexicans does not absolve her of culpability,” the board members wrote.

We have our 4th of July parade here every year; I help run it. I just had a meeting with the city council a few days ago. It's entire day of events that ends with $20k of professional fireworks.

The day starts with the Native Sons & Daughters pancake breakfast. You read right - Native Sons & Daughters.... During the parade we have multiple Mexican groups enter, dancers, and the Mexican dancing horses. The horses are amazing with what they can do.

This is part of our culture. American culture. The land our city was founded on was originally owned by American Indians, and part of California belonged to Mexico. Our town also celebrates a Portuguese festival, and also have events for Kwanzaa, and Quinoas are a weekly thing.

People don't seem to understand what American culture is. American culture is not white Europeans who celebrate Christmas. America is a melting part of ALL cultures.

If you do not accept this you need to leave. Go back to Europe.

Most of us in the United States have this image of Americans being "white". We see this constantly - in TV, the movies, commercials, etc... But this is no longer the reality.

I grew up in an area of NJ that was so white it was called German Town before World War II. We didn't have African Americans or Hispanic; The only cultural diversity we had was the three Italian families who all lived next to each other. We did have one African American in high school, but he was such an oddity that he was completely accepted. (He introduced us to the Sugar Hill Gang.) I never spoke to an African American or Hispanic until I found myself in boot camp at Paris Island and thankfully so - the Marine Corps accepts all Marines as the same. (In fact, in the Marines we were all "green" although sometimes African Americans were called "Dark Green".) There is not a racist bone in my body because when I was introduced to other races it was during Marine Corps boot camp, there was very little talking between us, and all of us were considered brothers of one large family.

I live in California now since 1989, and I've seen a huge change in our society here. The diversity on my street alone is amazing. The family next door to me is white husband with a Hispanic wife; on the other side they are from Columbia (and his two daughters just signed up to the US Army). Across the street we have a Muslim family I've never spoken to, a family from Egypt (he is a highway patrol officer), and then an Asian family. Further on down the street is a white white family, then a blended family with a portuguese wife and a white husband.

This is American society now. It's a little bit of everything. You used to see this when you went to the big city, like New York. Now they have moved into the suburbs and every where else. I think it's wonderful.

Yeah, I DO NOT live in USA, but seems like all that multiculturalism shit is pouring heavily over europe and I see what is happening. Try visiting germany (big cities) and walking around at night, I dare you to tell me you will not feel threatened by large groups of young muslims that are looking at you like you're candy.

I don't consider myself racist really - show me a good black man or family and I'll be best friends with him if it happens, don't see why not.

However, if I'd have to choose my child to go to school with 100 black kids or 100 whites, well, statistics would make me choose white kids anytime. It isn't fucking racism, it is simply common sense to make sure my kid is safer.

California is a bit more diverse than other states. I would imagine Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida are similar.

Other states - such as Louisiana - has a completely different kind of diversity. Major cities have entire districts which are dominated by certain races.

Some areas do not have this kind of diversity.

Where I live in Lincoln, California, 79% of the population are white, and 25% were Hispanic. (The math doesn't add up, but these are official stats; I am assuming some people identify themselves as half white / half Hispanic.)

(Keep in mind we are comparing a town of 50k in California vs a small town of 1k.....)

My point is here some people say "this is not my America" and for them, it isn't. They look around them and they see everyone around them is white. This is how I grew up in NJ - everyone was white. Now after thirty years in California it's vastly different. I live outside of the San Francisco Bay area, and outside of Silicon Valley, and we have a huge Hispanic population and large Asian population.

This is the changing face of our country.
