What media player you use with your TV?

I wanted a media player for my TV so that I can play digital media like movies and music from harddisk or USB stick on my TV without having to use a computer. I've tried two: Sumvision cyclone micro 2, and 4, both get tested best on several websites. First I tried the Cyclone 2 but it had some bugs, then bought the 4. It has bugs too:

1) layout of the buttons on the remote control is horrible.
2) Fast forward and rewind are horrible. When you use the 32x forward it plays a few seconds at normal speed, then skips a minute or so, then plays a few seconds at normal speed again.
3) Some formats not recognized even though my PC and Apple play them.
4) Some formats only play with video, no audio.

So I would like some recommendations for better media players, in the <$200 price range.

Thanks!

I looked it up and it looks interesting. So fast forward and rewind work fine on that?

It does pretty much everything. You can use the google play store to download any video playing apps you want, or use kodi, or do any number of things with it. Put a file on a USB stick, plug it n and play that. Supports 4K and does pretty much whatever you want it to do. The back of the airmouse remote is a full keyboard, so you can search or use it as a second computer if you like...

It is, after all, a dedicated box thats main job it was designed for, is playing media files on you TV via an HDMI lead. There's not much it cant do to be fair...

I just use Hulu. Watching Godzilla right now. Between Hulu and Netflix, I have lie TV, all of the sporting events, local tv stations, all of the tv stations, and pretty much every tv show and movie ever made.

Except for Hooper with Burt Reynolds and Adam West.

I tried it and hate it, sorry. It has lot of options but h265 movies that play fine on my PC, stutter on the Minix. Also when playing music, there isn't even an option to play full albums, it plays one song at a time, then you have to select the next song and press play again. Awkward hahaha. Navigation is horrible too... I returned it and am going to try a Roku Ultra 4K now.

Cheers!

I use my Sony PS4. Gets everything from netflix to youtube and you can even load a memory stick with music, pictures, and videos.

Sorry to hear that. Were you just using the default applications? I mean, its android. Same as a phone. You have the entire play store at your disposal, with multiple different music players available to use.

Anyway, like I said, sorry it wasn't for you - Hope you have better luck with the next one.

Dunno if that is possible with PS4, but I'll know soon since I gotta buy it to play red dead redemption 2 :P

I figured out that a wireless keyboard + mouse set is a best thing to deal with Android TV. Actually a mouse is more than enough to watch movies and play most of casual games. Course if you wanna play something like Baldur's Gate or SCUMM-based adventures (The 7th Guest, Full Throttle, Monkey Island etc), you'll need a keyboard too.

Yes I figured I could have tried installing another music player. But the issue with stuttering h265 video is a hardware issue that can't be fixed by software... those videos work fine in VLC media player on my 6 year old Windows PC.

I now have some Chinese android box I bought on eBay for 29.95... it doesn't play the h265 files at all. There is still the newest Minix to try, and the Roku, and the other toys the guys here are suggesting...

Thanks

okay that's weird, custom filter?

Axeman 10-31-2018 09:42 PM

I use a Android M8 box as well as AppleTv v4.

DirtyHarold 11-01-2018 11:38 AM

I now have the MXQ 4K Ultra HD Android 6.0 Marshmallow, even though h265 is mentioned in the specs, it doesn't play h265/hvec files or they stutter. I installed the VLC video player app and checked hardware acceleration but still problems. The VLC player plays these files fine on my old windows PC. I don't get it... I thought Android was such a fantastic OS. These movies aren't even 4k but just full HD. Watching Youtube through this box works great... but I was hoping it would do all without a problem. I am now going to convert these files to h264... so that at least I can watch them.

Thanks
