When White People Call Themselves ‘Nigga’
 

Watching First and Last on Netflix, this white guy in jail calls himself ‘nigga’ and his homies the same, though they’re black. He’s in a room full of black guys, using the word over and over.

“Man, me an’ my niggas gots a trunkful of zans ‘n guns ‘n shit. Fuckin’ niggas be hidin’ the weed ‘n trippin’ ova the budz ona floor”. “My fren’ an his sista don’t need no shit so I be takin’ it all and said it mines. Dis nigga ain gonna fuck a nigga up.”

I hear this lying down with my eyes closed. I sit up, rewind, to see a 17-year-old white kid and couldn’t stop laughing.

Now, black people use it as a good friendly word, not disrespectful. But a white kid calling black friend niggas or himself nigga? Dat ain right, dogg. ;)

He talked like his friends. Others would say he talked like he was black. I hate that phrase so he mimicked his friends. Is it acceptable to the black people here for white folks to refer to you as niggas, or themselves as niggas? Is this word now lingo for a person with jive?!?!

It might be accepted in Georgia but, to me, it’s not right. Black people don’t own the word, but you’d not call someone black a Pole if they hung around Polish people or a black person a Rusky if they hung out with Russians.

In school, they’d say someone was “trying to be black” if they were like this. I’d say, “you mean growing a big dick? Or “trying to get a big butt?”and humor would diffuse the situation. Stereotypes annoy the hell out of me, obviously.

I think the word has too much power and they should find a way to change that.
If he is with his friends and that is how they talk, that is how they talk. It is really up to his friends i think.

i said it b4 you better tread lightly. a guy i know in tempe he used to call people nigga. he was out at dicks hamburger on i think it was on university and told a brotha that shit and he shot him in the chest. i have no problem with it. i don't give 2 shits

i'm European. had a black colleague from Africa, we made good friends, had a few collabs on various songs, we've hit pubs together, etc.
after few years of friendship in, he pretty much asked me that if he amazes me with something, just exclaim "My nigga!" because that would mean there is total appreciation + he knows i don't give in to this racial bullshit so i wouldn't mean it maliciously. still, i didn't do that, but i know for him it'd be ok. strange guy :)

Someone else gets it! It’s reverse discrimination. If a bunch of white guys from the South calls each other honky, then a black friend said it, it’d be all over YouTube with protesters. I found it insulting and I’m not black.

Who’s worked up? I’m starting a discussion on a discussion forum. I’m curious about feelings on the subject.

They were in a holding cell, not convicted, not prosecuted. Just awaiting bond and talking, not on a chain gang. Wasn’t murderers but if they were I’d still wonder if it were acceptable.

Whites don't call each other honkey, cracka, etc. While nigga has almost become like the word "smurf" on the old cartoon it is used so much.

Made me cringe like crazy when he kept saying it to the black guy next to him.

People lose jobs, spouses, kids, money, lives over voting or believing the "wrong" way. Just the times we live in.

I've never said it, I do say wigger though. Maybe I have repressed racism or something but I can't stand white people who go on about how bad white people are or who act what they assume is "black". Usually they are invoking a caricature.

It's ignorant for anyone to say it and assume it means anything else just because you put an "a" instead of "er" on the end. You can say "bro", "brotha", or "brother" but it doesn't change the meaning. It's self degradation and any black man with some self respect doesn't use it. Black kids start using words like this (chaginging 'er' to 'a' or 's' to 'z') in school because they are picked on for "sounding white". Being intelligent and speaking proper English has a negative connotation to it.

Yet they all accepted it and no one said a word. I thought it was a comedy segment at first when he kept referring to himself as nigga. Then in front of guys awaiting a bond hearing, not knowing if they’d get angry or think of him as a fool . They listened,talked to him and I laughed when he called mommy for bail and she said no. He hung up on her like a spoiled brat.

I cried when Yoshua was deported. Left Mexico as a baby, the USA is his home. One mistake and he’s deported. And the young black kid taking the rap for the two older guys, one who stupidly admitted on TV they were guilty, not the kid.

I watch many Netflix prison shows. You see an element of society in the raw.
