new 2018 winter gear

I started transitioning my closet to cold wet weather gear and realized all my shit is over 5 years old and needs replacing and there is a lot of cool gear out there!

first, i need a new rain jacket. lot's of options for breathable, stretchy. looking at the Mountain Hardware Ozonic.

insulation, no down! tired of down. a couple layers of thin and thick fleece should do the trick.

Looking at Montbell for insulation.

My 3 year old winter jacket is spitting out feathers left and right.

Only five years?? I rarely buy any clothes, I feel like a cartoon character.

yup. the baffling on my down camping quilt de-threaded and now all the down goes straight to the edges. not sure what we're going to do about replacing that. the manufacturer said to send it in and they'll fix it. meh

Winter gear for me means.... long sleeves.

#winning.

Richard, that's what it means for everyone.
FYI: jackets, sweaters, base layers, thermals, etc. all have long sleeves which provide insulation and protection from cold wet weather in the winter.

You aren't a unique snowflake because you wear long sleeves in the winter.

As much as I hate to admit it, Ive been buying those fast dry pants by Wrangler from Walmart. They are $21 bucks vs paying $80 for one of the brand names at REI or elsewhere. They are pretty light weight and honestly dont look bad.

Not winter gear per say, but if you get a decent base layer they are fine anywhere isnt not extreemly cold.

would suggest moving somewhere that makes you forget winter even exists but realize that's not for everyone, for some reason :upsidedow

along with whatever the experts on this contribute, would suggest a knee-high pair of woolen striped socks. that I recall from the freezer aka canada

keeps your toes warm and they look awesome

I tend to agree. the prob I have with the lower cost winter gear is it doesn't breathe. I instantly start sweating but I'm still cold. misery. seems only the more expensive materials can insulate and/or be waterproof and still breathe.

I have a couple SmartWool sweatshirts and a jacket. Warmest/lightest combo I have ever seen.

I get cold easily. Last year I wanted to test them out. I wore the sweatshirt and then the jacket to a hockey game and actually started getting hot. Was impressed.

I now wear this "light" jacket in former instances where I would have worn a bulky heavy jacket.

I live in one of the most beautiful surfing cities on earth, Huntington Beach CA, I won't be moving. it gets super chilly in the winter here with strong offshore breezes and morning dampness and evening cold. it snowed here a couple years ago, covered the sand.

i do need to grab some new wool socks, they stretch out quickly it seems.

I've been looking at the smart wool base layer gear, I might snag that long sleeve crew now that you mention it. I always go with thermals but thermals are scratchy and not as comfortable as it seems the smartwool gear is.

this looks great, but youŽll still want a decent fleece and a waterproof layer....

3 layers are always best if you want real quality thermal clothing :thumbsup

I agree. I'm all in on the 3 layers. this is the base layer. got a montbell fleece midlayer coming, my old montbell down still has a lot of loft left in it so it stays in the line up and the rain shell.
