I read this and was just shocked. It appeared she didn’t understand Spanish and fed up, she said, “speak English, we’re in Texas.” Racist? But her grandson’s response was harsh, racist and cruel. The guy recorded it but he didn’t call her names. If grandma is going to use crude sayings in public, then she can expect her words to be public.

Walmart worker to customer: Speak English since ‘we’re in Texas’

A Houston man says he is being physically threatened after sharing a video on social media of an exchange with a Walmart employee who told him to speak English “because we’re in Texas.”

Joel Aparicio posted a 40-second clip of himself Sunday at a Walmart in Pasadena, where he experienced problems with the megastore’s self-checkout machine. Aparicio asked a store employee if she spoke Spanish, and she told him no.

She managed to fix the problem before walking away. But when the same issue happened again moments later, the same employee returned and told Aparicio that he shouldn’t be in the United States if he couldn’t speak English, he said.

Aparicio told the Houston Chronicle that at that point, he started to record the interaction, beginning with him asking the employee if it’s “necessary” to speak English inside the store.

“Yes, because we’re in Texas,” the employee said.

“Only because of that?” Aparicio said.

The employee appeared to admonish Aparicio for continuing the conversation in Spanish, telling him no repeatedly before again telling him to use English.

“I don’t know which way you’re going to pay,” the employee then said while gesturing to the cash register.

Aparicio then made reference to the woman’s apparent lack of “green eyes,” saying she didn’t have the look of someone who only spoke English.

“I live in Texas, so I speak English,” the employee said while walking away.

Aparicio, a native of El Salvador who has spent 13 years in Houston, told the Chronicle that he’s been going to that Walmart for about 10 years.

“No one had ever treated me like that in that store,” he told the newspaper. “They’ve always been friendly.”

Aparicio later posted the exchange on Facebook and received a torrent of complaints, including one purportedly from the employee’s grandson who promised to harm Aparicio if they ever crossed paths.

“Say you f–king Mexican bitch,” the message from a man named Arthur Cantu read. “Learn some f–king English hoe ass n—a. If I find you, I’ma f–k you up big time for messing with my grandmother.”

Some Facebook users suggested that Aparicio “learn to speak English if it’s that big of a problem,” while others claimed he must’ve been rude to the woman because she’s been known to speak both English and Spanish during her years of employment at the store.

“I know that lady,” one woman replied. “And she NEVER talks s–t about people speaking Spanish … just because she speaks English back when you talk to her in Spanish doesn’t mean she’s ‘racista.’”

But some insisted that Aparicio was to blame, saying his “refusal to assimilate” led to the interaction.

Aparicio said he notified police regarding the threats. A call seeking comment from Pasadena police was not immediately returned.

Walmart officials told the Chronicle that the incident would be handled internally

The woman, videographer or grandson?!

I figured there was more for him to write that. He made grandma look bad but she said that and it wasn’t made up so let the grandson get into it with grandma.

I heard similar things in school or in stores. People would speak Portuguese and someone would say, “speak English, this is America”, or the same for Creole. I’d ask why it was said and mom would explain America as a melting pot and accepting other cultures.

My great-grandmother spoke only Russian and Yiddish with a thick accent. She’d been in America since the turn of the century but still had that accent in her late 90’s. It wasn’t unusual to me to hear other languages spoken in America.

If she’d simply said “I don’t speak your language” there’d be no issue. But there isn’t a law or rule saying English in America only.

You pieces of shit. She is absolutely 100% right. You're in Texas SPEAK ENGLISH. And why was this guy filming her to begin this?

bronco67 10-18-2018 07:27 PM

I don't see what the problem is. She's Latina. She feels she needs to speak English and also that other Spanish speakers should speak in English while living in the USA.

I know a guy who gets pissed when his son is in public and tries to speak Spanish. Of course, I think "then why the fuck did you teach him Spanish?" But Anyway, it's ok for her because she speaks Spanish.

If it was some white redneck lady telling him to "speak English because we're in Texas" it would be a whole different story.

Pam Winter is nitpicking the most trivial bullshit out of all world news, as long as it is something racial. She's craving to get her daily 'racism outrage' fix leftwing extremist media has brainwashed her with.

No one brainwashed me. I saw the video and thought it was a topic of discussion. You think it's trivial because you are comfortable being a racist or living among racists. I don't get outraged but don't like discrimination. Period.

But, I admit I discriminate. I detest morons, race baiters, closet racists and those who feel the need to pick on other people to make themselves feel good. Yep, look in the mirror. It's people like you whom I discriminate against. I simply don't bother to waste my time reading trash written by trash.

Ignore is the greatest invention since almond biscotti. It also provides humor to see y'all checking my profile to see if you're still on ignore! Life is easier if you avoid the bullshit.

;)

Tell us again about the various cities you had the choice of moving to, Pam. Each city was very diverse with many black and brown people. I believe you said you had the choice of Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton and...Westport. The first 3 cities are very diverse with many social services that Pam probably needs. The last option is a small town, zero social services, which is probably why it's 99% white (no diversity).

Take a wild stab in the dark and guess which city Pam (who is constantly railing again racism and pushing "diversity") chose.

I am afraid after 10 years living in Spain I am embarrassed by my Spanish - However I am far from being out of the ordinary - Apart from the kids who live here hardly any English speakers learn Spanish...

English speakers - Including Americans - are the laziest in that regard.....

But can you survive? Can you ask about prices, wheris the bathroom, what's your number honey and I'm hungry —- that enough!

I Lerner a few Portuguese words that aren't Portuguese but are used by everyone. Shvheter is sweater, for example. People from San Michael (Miguel) use the official word but in the area, it's Americanized.

You have balls to move to another country not knowing the langusge. That takes real, gumption.

Snowflakes film this stuff to prove their "victim" status to their own kind. Ideally (for them), it gets bad enough to pull off a GoFundMe.

These people are pieces of shit.

Your weakness is thinking that everyone who doesn't agree with you 100% on every topic is a far left bleeding heart liberal.

You're a lazy dime store propoganda "intellectual" that just regurgitates what hot alt-right spooge is shoved in your ass on any given day.

This is the problem with you submissives. By design you don't evolve.

She was better than her grandson . His verbiage was uncalled for. She was calm, too, and gave her opinion without rancor. I disagree with her on most levels since she’s in Texas near the border. If in Iowa or Maine, I’d think about assimilation. Speak your native language, but if we’re kind enough to let you into our country and reap the benefits, learn our language to fit in better and unfortunately, be treated better Learn a few basics ands show gratitude you’re here and not in a country without freedom, welfare, acceptance and the ability to write your own thoughts on the internet without fear of prosecution.

Before you go nuts over “being let in,” remember people come here, if sponsored but often not, and get assistance of welfare money, rent and food. They can work illegally for cash. Public emergency rooms can’t legally turn you away. You can be here legally if you claim specific reasons why you can’t go back.

I’ve met people who have gone through the process and ran to Canada. Others were successful.

The USA is like this board. People from everywhere, different languages, religions and colors. Some work hard, pay taxes and get along with others. Some are assholes, lazy, prejudiced and obnoxious. You learn who has a real life and who lives life through a GFY forum. You have a choice.

I agree with what you've said here. Everywhere around the world I've traveled I've been a humble respectful grateful guest. People who enter foreign countries being loud, cocky & demanding have a good chance of getting bad service, food poising, paying bribes, ripped off and/or having a stint in jail.

Regarding the food poisoning, there was a restaurant in Australia I went to often and the chefs had a cuople trays of spoiled seafood they kept for loud demand British, Russian & American tourists. One if my models was a waiter there. If someone was an asshole they'd get something off those trays and sometimes it worked so quick they'd rush into the restaurants bathroom :1orglaugh

How does someone live for 13 years in a nation and not learn the language well enough to be able to handle a conversation with a Walmart employee?
