I kind of feel like backlinks are now more important than even 10 years ago, despite all the E-A-T stuff, user experience and other smart ideas. All comes down to frikkin backlinks.
There was a fun thread on google webmasters board where some rookie guy asked "what should I do, should I try getting some backlinks to help my site?" and even John Muller popped up to answer him. John Muller said, I quote: "Every effort you make to get backlinks is considered link manipulation and is forbidden.. blabla"
That being said, google is actually in a very awkward position if they even want to be honest and rank fairly.
Say all webmasters turn 100% honest today, what kind of backlinks would even remain? 99.99% of backlinks is "manipulation" because you WANT people to visit some site, which would in a broad way equal manipulation. Like that case with paid news portal articles with backlinks, for the sole SEO purpose.
Plus google gotta squeeze in their own ads in the results, thus making them unfair to begin with...
Funny all together, and I don't see even a theoretical way that serp pages could become good.
