Military already moving equipment to southern border

PRAGUE (AP) — The U.S. military has already begun delivering jersey barriers to the southern border in conjunction with plans to deploy active duty troops there, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Sunday as a caravan of Central Americans slowly heads across Mexico toward the United States.

Mattis told reporters traveling with him that details of the deployment are still being worked out but he should have them Sunday night. They will include exactly how many forces are needed. It was unclear when the details will be made public.

The additional troops will provide logistical and other support to the Border Patrol, and will bolster the efforts of the approximately 2,000 National Guard forces already there. The new forces are expected to provide logistical assistance such as air support and equipment, including vehicles and tents.

National Guard troops routinely perform those same functions, so it is not clear why active duty forces are being used.

President Donald Trump for the past week has been calling attention to the caravan heading by foot into southern Mexico, but it is still hundreds of miles from U.S. soil.

The National Guard is often used by states to help with border security. But active duty troops are rarely deployed within the United States except for domestic emergencies like hurricanes or floods.

If that caravan gets to the border and tries to come in, we could have a real ugly situation in a hurry.

Bladewire 10-28-2018 02:21 PM

Obama did the same thing in 2010

National Guard deployment on U.S.-Mexico border has mixed results

These caravans have been coming here 3-4 times a year for over a decade.

Obama Asks for $3.7 Billion to Aid Border

Obama requested $3.7 Billion from congress to get more feet on the ground at the border and install electronic surveillance, the Republican congress refused to put any money into border protection.

The funny thing is these immigrants aren't going to be here for a couple months they are walking and they are over 2000 miles away! :1orglaugh

Trump is sending troops now purely for political reasons and is wasting money!

Bush sent troops to the border in 2006.

This is nothing new

Common sense. We have systems and protocols. All of them that claim asylum at the border have to be processed for asylum.

They are also using vehicles. I think democrats wanted them at the border just before the election, but the scheme backfired when news of the caravan riled up right wing voters.

Trump isn't doing that.

He cut personnel down at the 19 ports of entry, the only places that people can claim asylum.

People are camped out there for weeks and only 4-10 people A DAY were being processed for asylum, most all were rejected and processed for deportation.

Because of this, people were getting desperate, leaving the port of entry, and crossing illegally a few feet away in front of border agents. They were desperate for food & water.

In any other continent these people would be refugees.

Asylum seekers wait days and weeks at U.S.-Mexico border

Asylum seekers have to be locked up while their case is being processed. Few of those cases are approved. Then we have to pay to send them back home.

"Refugee" status seekers are more common since it's catch and release for them. The US does not have to accept refugee status seekers from central America. International law says they must go to the nearest nation and then the next and so on. This caravan is turning down help in Mexico. Thus meaning we can turn them all away.

But all of this needs to change. They are invaders and the military needs to deal with them.

Bullshit.

China would kill them. Australia turns their boats away.

well, I'm disappointed to hear that. I was going to add a blurb about my assuming trump's ICE would treat the asylum seekers humanely but left it out because i assumed the asylum laws are international laws.

Trump, if you're going to turn them away, at LEAST let them vote (for Democrat) in the mid-term elections first.

Why wait? This would only keep them walking more for nothing. The army will have to be sent anyway or they will just keep walking.

dyna mo 10-29-2018 11:34 AM

Oh no! A caravan of women and children are coming! Grab your guns!
