Which Platform Would You Choose & Why
 

I’m deciding on my wiki software. I see five platforms available and some software does more than one.

Programming done in: Python, Perl, html, PHP and JavaScript

Method of saving: Files, RCS and database

What’s best? What’s the difference?

I’m not familiar with RCS but files and dB I know, though I thought dB could be php, sql and others. Files sounds like I’d have to zip up the files to save as one entity.

Html programming scares me a little as html is easily hacked and it changes often. Php seems the standard with sql dB. JS seems sketchy for a dB and Perl is ancient. Python sounds snakey ! I’m unfamiliar with it.

Opinions, please. Then I can narrow down my nine options. I wanted to test each program but I don’t want to love one only to find out the programming is outdated, vulnerable or buggy.

All claim to be the best. I’d use the Wikipedia platform but need knowledgeable people to guide me.

It’s for a basic wiki site. Enter phrase, find info. Links will be added to each entry. I’m not looking for something that looks cheap and thrown together nor the Tesla of wiki. Free and simple and easy to surf, almost like a beginners wiki.

I can list my options if needed. I just don’t want something I’ll regret choosing or with a huge learning curve. Amnesia plays a part, too, so easy to use with buttons and not remembering how is needed.

All opinions welcome except those telling me to spend money. Free, free, free unless you want to buy me a Hanukkah gift. ;). Bows only, no ribbon or strings.

You are quite confused.

1. HTML is NOT a programming language. You cannot display anything in a browser without HTML. HTML is NOT easily hacked, it is pretty much hack proof as all it does is control the presentation of the data, usually with the help of style sheets (.css files).

2. PHP, PERL, Python and Javascript are all programming/scripting languages. PHP, PERL and Python run on the server side. Javascript traditionally runs on the client side, in the browser but there are server versions such as nodejs. None of these are databases or storage systems.

All of these produce HTML that is displayed in the browser. Javascript can also be used to manipulate the HTML in the browser's DOM (Document Object Model)

3. RCS is (as far as I am aware) not a method of saving files or data. It stands for Revision Control System which is a platform to manage a project. Github would be an example of an RCS.

4. Files can be used for storing data as can a SQL compliant database such as MYSql (most common you will find), MSSql (Microsoft), PostgreSQL and various others.

The most common solutions you will find will be in PHP with a MYSql database. This will also probably be the easiest to find programmers for.

None of these are more or less prone to hacking or security issues. That all depends on how the code is written and how up to date you keep your versions.

I know nothing about the various wiki solutions out there.

You really need to educate yourself on this shit if you are going to be running sites. Google, w3schools, stackoverflow and other resources are your friend. Use them as other people will not be as gentle with you as I am. If you are having problems because of memory issues then fucking notes.

I am still pissed off that you never acknowledged your fucking signature issue but I did notice you changed it up. When you fuck up, own it.

No answers to see yet publicly. PMs next to look at and answer. I asked on another forum and have pretty much narrowed it down to two. Tomorrow I hope to install and test.

One suggestion was Wordpress and a strong search engine. I’d thought of that already and decided against it.

A freelancer I’ve used offered to build one for $20. I politely declined as I know he’ll just copy code from a known script. I’m cheap but not stupid. I feel bad for those who go for it when the lawyers come after them. Unfortunately, this happened to me once when I was green.

Why do you recommend it? MediaWiki is one of the two most recommended. Tomorrow hopefully I’ll install and test it out. (I need to concentrate and not be bothered but my PT guy comes in when he wants — no appointment — so I’ll either start and then interrupted, or wait until he leaves. I have a feeling that this is easy to install and the learning curve is small.

Initially I found ten programs. Now I’m up to nineteen. I like to view the source code as I learned in the old days. One vulnerability and I knew I had to learn. Back then, it seemed every new program or update had a line of code that killed your software or Windows install. I had money then so spending on legal software was smart. I always feared the cops would seize my computers and find illegal downloads. Rumors of that were rampant .... now, no one cares.

The good old days of trying to download a program on a 14.4 or 28.8 modem. 56k was FAST! You’d be 80% done and get disconnected..

the sig that I cannot recall word for word was basically "pretty chicas good and deserve self-esteem/ugly chicas bad and should stop fooling themselves" and she did not specify the criteria required for determining that differentiation

the criteria is important: for example in New York and Miami I am at the high end of the 'normal' weight range despite a BMI in the 18's, in Jamaica I am considered emaciated. Same body, just diff places have diff standards.

How are women supposed to know if we can enjoy our bodies without parameters of approval?

I don't have any personally but that's a combination of loving working out and honestly mostly genetics. Fit as fuck women can get it before they hit 20. men can as well though not nearly as common.

Truth is we live in a society that judges the physical appearance of women with the ease it takes to take a breathe. Thin women in N.A. get concern or kudos, larger women get judged as 'lazy/unintelligent/unorganized/ugly blah blah (shut the fuck up) fucking blah'

I would never equate the two (underweight vs over) in terms of social impact. I am outweighed (pardon the pun and absolutely NO disrespect to BBW's intended)

Has any nation ever done an election test to see how the candidate compares visually to Shemar Moore or Liya Kebede? I felt the pressure and judgment until I left CA. Now here I can just do what I want for myself.

That proposed idea might actually work though, we'd be left in a state of anarchy as no one would measure up and we could try to build new systems

Tried to install via Windows but ran into issues, mostly unable to remember and googling didn’t help. Tomorrow I’ll tackle it again though I asked my webhost to install it. I researched it more and it seems to be just what I need.

All instructions for Windows 10 pointed to things in the Start menu I don’t have. Tomorrow I’ll try again and hopefully it’s installed.

I might have missed other suggestions so if you posted and I didn’t acknowledge it, thanks anyway. Lots of blocked posts but I think the two choices I have will work out.

This is the easy part. Next is research to fill in the search questions. PHP and MySQL is perfect and many others use RCL or something like that, unknown languages scare me. JavaScript had exploits or vulnerability issues long ago. Don’t remember what they were and it’s probably solved. Industry standard software is better, to me, than trying new alternatives. Help is easily found.

i tried installing it once on linux machine and all the errors i got were about file permissions .,.easy to fix.
