They applied to join NATO in 2008.

This scared Putin, so he fucked their election and installed Viktor Yanukovych as their POTUS who put joining NATO on hold. Since ousting Yanukovych and his government, they're now in the MAP approval process.

No, not smart at all. There are not many Russians who enter the Ukraine. Mostly those who have family members there or sex tourists (the Ukrainian girls are cheapest ones across the Europe and there are lots of beautiful ones).

In fact there are millions of Ukrainians who enter Russia. Those who have family members here or those who seek a job in Russia as plumbers, plasterers, prostitutes etc (just FYI: the Ukraine is a very poor country). So if Russia will close its borders to the Urkainian citizens, it will be yet another Maidan revolution in Kiev. The Ukrainians may be angry on Russian government (I do understand their feelings, because I hate Putin too), but they won't exist without a possibility to cross the Russian border.

So cross your finders and let's hope that Putin won't close the Russian border to the Ukrainian gastarbeiters and immigrants.
