from what I recall of NA, businesses of the same genre tended to group together. like a friend of mine who was a very serious fast food gourmand buying his whopper at BK and then crossing the street for McD fries (which will kill you btw, I read it on the internet so truth)
or the stretch of Bloor between Bathurst and Spadina that had 4 futon stores side by side.
Machiavellian but not necessarily a stupid move. I just think it's weird (I'd like my meal to cost more than a stick of gum) and while I'm not their target audience I wouldn't be receptive to that sort of thing.
fun fact about McD's in JA. Jamaica is awash in fast food, KFC is a fucking money printing factory. Same with all the other big ones. But no McDonalds
McD came to Jamaica and tried to bully a long-running restaurant out of business because two peeps ran a restaurant named McDonalds. One of whom originally created the biz in that name as it was his name
Didn't go well for the conglomerate, they were boycotted and fled
