New 30 Storey Building might Collapse at Sydney Olympic Park

Not a good Christmas Eve for residents of a brand new high rise apartment building in Sydney or those in buildings around it.

Up to 3000 residents have been evacuated from multiple buildings at Sydney Olympic Park amid loud "cracking noises" being heard within the recently-completed Opal Tower apartment building, sparking fears of a collapse.

An emergency operation launched on Monday afternoon remains in place, with an exclusion zone set up that includes the train station and neighbouring apartment buildings as engineers, firefighters and paramedics entered the building to assess its structural integrity.

Price might of dropped a bit now.. fuckign property developers building the slums of tomorrow. Get yourself a bargain for just under a million Au for a 2 bedroom shoe box, only 45 minutes to the city centre by train,...

Imagine being an apartment owner in that building, even if it's given the all clear, could you sleep soundly at night again?

There's a long thread on Reddit about this and an upvoted post by a structural engineer has made me really glad I've never bought into a high rise.

Its a slum of tomorrow development, its just come about a bit quicker. They whacked up like 20 sky scrapers, then dug out as far below with shopping and trains.

like 5000 people thrown out of there homes for xmas, not allowed to go near the buildings, many are already away on xmas holidays and at this stage no ideas to even guess when they might be able to return... if ever. MANY are first home buyers.

As a Kiwi.. if an earth quake of any magnitude was ever to hit Sydney, half the city would fall down. Units are fine, just don't ever buy new, give them at least 15 years so there's some sort of history, and then good luck on finding one with a decent and cashed up body corporate.

I agree and we've had earthquakes on the east coast before, Newcastle for example only resulted 160 injuries and 13 deaths because they didn't have tall buildings.

yeah too many fat cunts living on the right... Scary thing is that even though the building only moved millimetres, it was enough to jam most doors so the cops and fire department had to go level by level busting down doors to get people out. Majority of apartments only have one door and it'll be a nice solid fire retardant door, so a bit more than a boot required to open.

Is that another CHUMP Tower ?

We have a similar issue in San Francisco with the Millennium Tower. It's sinking and leaning in one direction. Of course, this is San Francisco we are talking about - lots of earthquakes.

Joe Montana from the 49ers lives there.

I'm guessing this was built on the build up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic games, Most the Olympic Park land there was built on swamp land, so no surprise the building tilted.

oh well...

New building, opened in August, built on a pond.
