Wordpress really fucked up with the new Editor

It seems Wordpress really fucked up with the new editor in 5.0

I am on a developer Slack channel that has some inside info and it looks like the old editor may become the default again in a future version.

The Classic Editor workaround plugin has had millions, literally millions, of installs as Wordpress users reject the new editor hand over fist.

Denny 01-07-2019 09:28 AM

Yeah, I stay clear of that crap.

The Classic Editor Plugin is good though, it does what it says on the box.

It's not that bad. People just don't like changes. Plugins still work, at least all I tested.
You can still using the old editor: https://es.wordpress.org/plugins/disable-gutenberg/

:thumbsup

Porko,

I agree with you that people don't like change, I tried to embrace the new editor with that in mind but in the end it was taking way too much time to do things than the old editor.

It might be a good product for newbies.

Heu Dave,

Yes, I don't like the new editor neither but imho its easy to use for the average person. it's more visual, some kind of 'what you see is what you get'. I still using the old editor anyway because I feel more comfortable but I really feel is not that bad, the problem seems to be it was a fast radical change. I think people prefer gradual changes and adaptations.

:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

Agree with all this. Most users wouldn't have known it was coming either.

They rushed it and released it too early, it's simply not fit for purpose. I mean you can't even specify which image size to use when creating a gallery, it just embeds the full size image. So much for a faster web...

Yeah, that's pretty useless.

blackmonsters 01-07-2019 10:19 AM

My web sites don't need the editor; all the content is by feeds.

:)

bgmen 01-07-2019 10:46 AM

Failure is obvious. I notice that Gutenberg has become an additional plugin again.

Robbie 01-07-2019 11:02 AM

It's a piece of cake to use. I just switch to Code edit and work the same way as before.

Worse Crap Ever!
Just installed Classic Editor plugin.

CjTheFish 01-07-2019 11:30 AM

Classic editor has quickly become my favorite plugin!

Nicky 01-07-2019 02:01 PM

I don't personally see this happening. The proverbial cat is out of the bag. Theyve spent more than a year developing it and makiing it "core". They've done videos and tutorials and speeches and rollouts etc all touting how great it is. If you watch Matt Mullenweg's keynote speech, he is literally giggling and gushing over it. There's no chance he is backtracking on it.

I think best case scenario is extended support for the classic editor plugin beyond the stated 2 years. But even then, I cannot see the WP Dev team continuing to be invested on two types of editors.

Maybe not, someone will fill the void though, that's the beauty of the WP ecosystem, anyone can make plugins.

For those interested in the history of WP this article is a good trip down memory lane.

This was a horrible release.

One of the charities I am involved in runs a Wordpress install with a theme called Divi, which uses a single page to run the entire site. With the changes to the editor we were unable to update the site at all.

This seems to be the way to go for now.

Yeah, Divi users got screwed. Fortunately it was addressed by Elegant Themes.

Not a big fan here either. Now lots of theme and plugin authors have to learn the new code if they want to support Gutenberg and it's a pain in the ass when it feels forced on you.
