Twitter is the only power he has. The people who run Twitter could stop all of this bullshit by deleting his account. He would be stopped dead in his tracks if he can't spout lies on Twitter all day.

I (kind of) understand why he uses Twitter as a way to circumvent the media. But what seems strange is that the leader of the most powerful nation is using a 3rd party truncated post platform.

The concept of a direct message unfiltered is a good concept, but seriously is Twitter the best he can do?

He doesn't use Twitter for that. He uses Twitter for the likes and retweets he gets. It's instant satisfaction to his ego. It is the same reason he holds rallies all the time. It's the reason he can't accept the fact that there were less people at the inauguration, or more voters for Hillary, or higher ratings for the Schumer/Pelosi rebuttal to the address than the actual address. It's the reason why he held a press conference the other day while Dems had their first day in the House. If he thinks he's not getting enough attention, crybaby trump pulls a stunt.
