How long do hosting company keep backups for normally?
I am with Certified Hosting and my network was infected with malware and Certified says they only do weekly backups (Sunday). Network went down Wednesday and they said they can only restore to last Sunday (3 days ago and nothing before that???!!).
Is that normal? That a hosting company only keeps 1 backup? With no previous week's restore ability. I just find that awfully bad business practice for a hosting company to keep only one single backup. What happens if the malware started before their sunday backup like it was the case with me? I realize I should have done backups as well so I'm to be blamed for not being more deligent but seriously though, how can a hosting company only keep 1 single backup and nothing beyond that sunday backup??:Oh crap Perhaps some hosting companies here can chime in and let me know if its normal business practice for hosting companies to only have one weekly backup I would think they would have at least a few backups, or a monthly backup at the very least. But to say they delete their backups after one week? Maybe it's just me but in this day and age with malware,etc... that can affect servers/accounts, I just think a hosting company should be prudent enough to keep at least backups longer than 3 days??? FYI, considering Certified Hosting suffered a total server loss a few months ago, you would think they would be more careful with saving multiple backups. |
Not sure, depends on the host probably. Anyway CH sucks, better move to Vacares or Mojohost.

This is their official reply to me when I inquired how is it that they only keep 1 backup:
"Hello, As Glenn stated previously, Certified Hosting does internal administrative backups every Sunday. Each Sunday, the previous week's administrative backup is overwritten, and is no longer available. " :disgust |
This is a joke. They just told me that my account is now cleaned and the malware removed. Yet after removing the malware, none of my sites are working anymore.
I was better off with the malware. At least with the malware, I had some sites working lol |

There is no normal when it comes to backups. Many companies don't offer it at all. We keep them for 6 months.
If you do not have a robust backup service with your hosting plan, I highly recommend you run a backup regularly through the available control panel and download it to your computer, or better yet, save it in the cloud somewhere. You can cycle them every 6 months or so to save hard drive space. Feel free to reach out to me and I can give you some more information on how to set this up with your current plan. |
It is definitely not 'normal practice'. We offer bi-weekly backups at a minimum and retain them for over a month as a standard and can customize it to your liking if needed.
Thank you, Denny, for recommending us! |
not understanding why you want to back up more back ups, each back up updates from the past back up so you have all relevant information. Youīd have your full server backed up if it was from last Sunday...
I donīt think they redo everything, just updates goes onto the past back up, you would be able to know if itīs from the back up before... your Sunday back up will be clear if it went down Wednesday :2 cents: |
You have to keep ur scripts up to date.... or make custom ones
