Aikido always looks easy as and I know Segal likes to talk himself up but it is still a very effective self defence.

aikido is dangerous...it makes people believe that they can actually defend themselves with this dance coreography bullshit...an average blue belt from any BJJ club will destroy any black belt aikido master...I know this because we have an aikido class before our BJJ and grappling class...

I would compare aikido to capoera...it is a dance...

I can see how you view it as still a female martial art but any counter move of any martial art is some form of preparation. there are far more lethal martial arts. Grappling suits some body types rather than others but I wouldn't think anyone would be focused on a single Japanese style that didn't combine some judo, kendo as part of it all.

I disagree. It's more a police discipline (police in many countries learn it), because boxing is not something that a police officer should do when he needs to quickly disable a bad guy.

Also as Bruce Lee said, it doesn't matter which exactly MA discipline you learn, because the only important thing is HOW you do it.

As an example, my son has a brown belt in Aikido. When he decided to learn other disciplines, he started with Kudo and after a half of year he went to a Moscow MMA Kudo championship championship held by GRU (yes, that GRU ;)) veterans and won 2nd place there. And yes, he used his Aikido skills. He has defeated his partner with a painful reception on the floor in the final fight. He didn't learn that technique in Kudo. He learned it in Aikido.

Perhaps there is a difference between classic Japanese Aikido and Aikido with national specifics. Aikido in Russia is not the same as Aikido in Japan. For example here they actively use punch technique. Just as a funny fact, the boy has broken my right rib when he was only 16 )

Also when my son went to university, he started to learn Sambo and it was easy to him because of Aikido background, since these styles have a lot of same wrestling techniques. He has learned Sambo for yet 5 more years and Aikido was always helpful.

If you say it doesn't work on the street, you will be wrong again. My son has a rich background in street scuffles. First time he has came home with a knife cut on his palm when he was 12 or so. And honestly, if he didn't learn Aikido, that fight would turn much worse to him...

P.S. Don't know how come, but Steven Segal is a Russian citizen :upsidedow

aikido as "self defense" is dangerous because it will give people a false sense of security...especially women...this is my 36th year in martial arts and I taught my girlfriend the "hidden knife" as I call it...it is the only realistic scenario where a weak person can actually defend him/herself against an attacker...you act like a fucking pussy and beg and cry until the opponent comes close enough and then a knife to the groin and to to the throat with less than a second pause between surprise stabbings...you never show the knife until the very last second...

the other alternative is years of martial arts and a specific body type (over 200lb min)...there is no 3rd scenario where a weak person can defend himself without a gun or some weapon...aikido is dangerous...you will have a very very bad time with it...90% of all martial artists are pussies even with martial arts...reality and TV are vastly different...

I give my hand to aikido dudes they do not posses the physical strength to bend it...aikido is not a sparring/punching art and any street brawler is not going to stand and wait for some fancy aikido move, he will swing punches like a madman...now you either know how to box or you know how to wrestle...anything else is useless...

as for your son beating militrary/police we demolish police and special forces simply because they do not have our training...they are good at shooting guns, tactics, explosives etc but the are not masters of anything...a few years ago I got arrested by the organized crime unit (I helped some dudes buy liberty reserve and they did shit with it), long story short I got surrounded by 10 cops who started hitting me from all sides and I thought it was candid camera or a joke...I have not been hit by "weak" people who are not trained super heavyweights for decades...they stopped hitting me after like 10 seconds when they saw no reaction...I asked them if they were kidding and they pulled their guns on me...true story...

Physical strength is A MUST for any martial arts. That's why my son lifts iron during all his life.
