The border wall. Trump apparently no longer expects funding from Congress for his proposed border wall, even though talks have two weeks left to run.

He called the negotiations a "waste of time" and strongly hinted that he plans to build it without congressional support by declaring an emergency. "I've set the table," he said.

"I've set the stage for doing what I'm going to do." He also said: "I’ll continue to build the wall and we’ll get the wall finished."

Great. Super. He can declare a national emergency and it will get tied up in court and suck up yet more time, more effort, more money, and in the long run will most likely be shot down. It's painfully obvious that there is no emergency and this will come out in court where the Trump administration will have to deal with facts and not the bullshit lies he spits out.

Just today (yesterday?) it was announced they discoverer a tunnel over a section where there is no wall:

We have walls where walls are needed, fences where fences are needed, and vehicle barriers where vehicle barriers are required. Spending hundreds of billions of dollars to put up walls where walls are needed, where illegal drugs are not being carried over the border, and where illegals are not crossing the border is a massive waste of money.

Trump can declare a national emergency and frankly, I hope he does. We now have troops at the border - we just sent three thousand more - and I would love to know what our troops are actually doing if this is a national emergency. Are they patrolling the border, arresting people crossing illegally, or are they cleaning up horse shit like last time? Why is this suddenly an emergency? Illegal immigration is on the decline, and has been for the past decade.

And even if it is decided in court that there is a national emergency, spending hundreds of billions of dollars on a wall wouldn't be the proper response. The problem is at the ports of entry, not at areas where there is no wall, and if there is national emergency we would need to need to hire more Border Patrol agents or send in more troops... Not spend the next five years building a wall. If it is an emegency it needs to be handled NOW, not years of building walls.

This entire administration is a joke.

The wall is a diversion. Ignore it, and dig deeper.

Provide us details. Where exactly are those locations, and how many people cross there every year? Should we invest in forty million dollars to stop two people from entering the country there?

Before the 20 year project even gets started, Trump will be out of office and it will be scrapped. That's assuming he even gets to the starting stage. No one is against border security. However, that doesn't mean we need throw money away in the name of border security which is exactly what Republicans want us to do.

If we need to build a wall some place, then by all means build a wall. But if we can accomplish the same goal by building a fence for a fraction of the price, then we should build a fence. But by no means are we going to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on a wall from sea to sea when it's clearly not needed.

$6 billion, not sea to sea

There is no doubt in my mind that there is some areas with no wall, fence, or barrier. However, these are areas were it is not cost effective to put up such barriers. If no one crosses in a certain area, there is no reason to spend tens of millions of dollars or whatever to put up a wall.

Trump is saying we are going to build a wall. He tells us it's going to be a great wall. He didn't say he was going to build a wall in "some areas". The impression he is giving everyone is that he is going to build a great wall. It's going to be from West side of California to the East side of Texas. So.... From the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf Of Mexico. Sea to sea.

Here is an article by Fox News that pegs the cost at $25 billion. It could cost anywhere from $150 million to $750 million a year for maintenance.

All of this would do nothing to address the problem. The problem is the ports of entry. Illegal immigrants come into the country legally, then don't go home. The drugs are being smuggled in through the ports of entry, such as the huge bust just the other day.

There is so many better places we can spend billions of dollars.

The present border is not doing it's job. Otherwise you wouldn't need more border guards.
