SSD vs HDD for serving images using nginx ?
is there significant performance increase if using SSD instead of HDD for serving Images using nginx ?
Thanks for your time. |
yes and no? yes on the basis that the ssd should offer better performance depending on server/plugins, but if you have a CDN it won't matter
|
You will receive better performance with SSD with or without a CDN.
A CDN still needs to feed from the source and the quicker the source the quicker the deployment of assets, videos and images across the CDN. I think these days you're mad not to go with SSD, considering that budget SSD servers from the big providers are now commonplace. |

Thanks. |
Just decide which is more important for you for now: Saving money, or faster delivery. If speed is paramount, go with SSD. Otherwise, stick with HDD.

You can significantly increase your speed even with HDDs.... just set them with RAID10

Throw in a NVMe and things really get fun… |

I had a case where a client had ~20gb images and he took cheap 32gb ram servers and we served these images from memory using Varnish so it was super-fast! The client had TGP/MGP style network and had insane amounts of traffic and had couple of servers setup like this burning 300gbps bandwidth 24/7. In case of HDD vs SDD there's no doubt that it will be quicker on SSD. But again depends on caching and how often some files are served... |
Ssd > hdd

OVH.com has a EG-16 with 2 x 450GB NVMe drives for $89/mn with 500Mbps/pipe. Or the SP-32 with same setup for $96/mn |
