Weird new Craigslist Scam

So today I tossed an old Printer I want to sell on to Craigs List. Within 5 minutes of posting the message I started getting text messages from someone who told me he sent a "Verify Code in your Phone". I told him I didn't get it and he went on about CR scams, told me if I didn't give him the code then he wouldn't buy the printer, blah blah.

Anyway I used the Googlemachine and learned its a scam but I still don't know how it works. What does giving some code received as a text message to a thief actually do?

The guy tried to create a new account ( with your phone number in the ad you posted ) and he need the verification code sent to your phone
to get activated ?

Just thinking load right now :winkwink:

He's signup for an account somewhere than needs phone verification, could be Twitter, could be eBay could be anything.

He used your mobile as a place to get the SMS verification code and once you give it to him you'll never hear from him again, but that may not be the last you hear of it - especially if your number has been used for nefarious purposes.

Yes, as some have mentioned, you are verifying a legit number for someone else's actions.

I never respond to text or phone calls that are not in my phone book. Leave a voice mail and if I like what you say, I'll call you back. My phone book has 600+ numbers

You need a dummy email address for such things. Force Co's to use email over phone verification when you can. Before you know it, it will be mandatory to use the cellphone.

But I don't like the need to be near my phone for verification's to do anything on the web. Apple's faceid is probably the next step but I can see issues with that quite quickly.
Perhaps we need to give away our DNA info....

When there is nothing left that is unique and not hackable... What Then ???
All of your unique and personal info will be floating around out there.

It's the next BIG crisis... 'ID's'

I'm just tired of those giving folks the false sense of security with electronic communication. It is worse, not better. Because they are cheap and lazy and they will figure that out at a latter date. Profits Today ! Loose your bank account at the speed of thought.... Amazing.
