Fairy Bread
I just read this and saw a picture of it. For those Down Under, is the snack really a thing? I mean it’s pure carbohydrates and sugar and unhealthy as fried butter.
"The most beautiful invention to have ever come out of Australia in my humble opinion. For those of you who have the misfortune of not knowing what fairy bread is, it’s a slice of white bread spread with a thin layer of butter and then sprinkled with a generous layer of hundreds and thousands [sprinkles]. Heavenly.” The photo was a slice of white bread with ice cream sprinkles or jimmies. |
I think its limited to stoners with nothing else in the cupboards and parents in the 70's and because of that I'd guess its a childhood memory for many.
But yeah, white bread, butter, sugar and assorted food colouring's.. Sounds like half the child targeted breakfast cereals ;) |
Because I have a 4 year old daughter, I have some rainbow sprinkles in the cupboard. I don't think that's exactly what they're using, but it could work. I have the butter. The thing I don't have is the bread because I don't even buy bread anymore because the late night sandwiches were making me softer around the waist than I wanted to be. If I had willpower I wouldn't have banned bread from the house but that's another story.
Anyway I would make that right now because I'm high. I may pick up a loaf of white ass Wonder bread tomorrow to be prepared next time. |

My main sin as an 70's kid was hacking off a slice of fruit cake and smothering that in butter then washing it down with a 1/2 bottle of milk, the difference to todays kids is then we went outside and ran around like looneys or did sport until being called in for dinner of.. over cooked veges and stewed meat. |

I still love chip butties White bread slathered with real butter on both slices then one slice is layered with deep fried french frys, and covered with a little salt and malt vinegar. A heart attack weighting to happen.

My sprinkles or jimmies have two grams of sugar per tablespoon. That’s much less than cereals and soda but the food coloring scares me. I have a teaspoon about twice a week on sugar free ice cream. Funny story: I was telling my nurse today about fairy bread. She asked how I learned it was real and without thinking said, “oh Mr Bald Bastard from Australia confirmed it” and she got quiet. “Do you have nicknames for all your friends like Mr Bald Bastard?” We laughed and I realized what I’d said! I briefly explained that it’s a nickname on a forum but between that and fairy bread, she now is convinced that I’m doing illegal drugs with my iced coffee! (This reminds me that a friend used to scoop Crisco with her fingers, roll it in sugar , and eat it. I tried it once. NEVER again.) |
