"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" - What did you think?
So I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
What did you think? No Spoilers: I saw it the other night. I thought it was... a little weird, a little slow, and a little weird. There's lots of driving around, lots of obscure 60's music. Lots of dialog. Some fun movie-within-a-movie stuff. Some GREAT acting by Leo & Brad. But... but but... I just found it pretty damn morning. It's a typical Tarantino slow-burn to epic payoff (That ending - wow). But damn if I wasn't zoning out at times. Did you see it? What did you think? Did I miss Margo Robbie's tits? |
stoned movie:thumbsup
inherent vice is also good |
too long.

Stick to the MCU, Mark. Tarantino is for grown-ups.

I thought it was great, and I agree with you on a few points.
Acting was top notch, and I believe Brad Pitt sort of stole the show. I think he just had better scenes overall. |

He has talent, and i've always enjoyed his movies for the most part but it's more often than not overrated nostalgia porn. His movies could have been much more if he hired an actual editor, but he was always too arrogant for that and we are left with movies that are long and drawn out with a mix of gore that is usually out of context with the story. |

This movie reminded me a lot of "Death Proof". There are long scenes where the actors are just talking about seemingly (actually?) stuff unrelated to the movie. What it's doing of course is crazy character building. It's a super slow burn to the epic crash, and then another slow burn to the epic car chase and truly epic beat-down. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is similar. The ultra-violent ending is gross as hell and incredibly fun and funny, but still, something is just not working for me. It seems less satisfying than QT's previous efforts to me. |

If you aren't familiar with the manson family murders it doesn't make any sense. For example Margot Robbie character has zero relevance without that background.

It's a movie which seems unfocused...and it kind of is unfocused, although after the last 20 minutes much of that stuff you might think is unimportant, like the Cliff vs Bruce Lee scene, Cliff feeding his dog, the flamethrower, turns out to be some pretty nice setup.
And that last act was fantastic. I should have seen that coming but I didn't. it's no Inglorious Basterds, but I still enjoyed it because even a mediocre Quentin Tarantino movie is better than most other movies. |
QT has been trying to recreate the success, both commercially and artistically, of Pulp Fiction for twenty years now and he hasn't come close. Every movie since then (Kill Bill, Django Unchained, etc) have been over-stylized gorefests with little story, plot or motivation. Just all blood, guts, endless dialogue meant to sound 'hip' and senseless violence.
He's exactly like M. Night Shamalama ding-dong: one great movie, a couple halfway decent ones, the rest pure crap. |
I'll watch anything with Margot Robbie in it . . .

Seeing it tonight, so not reading the thread yet. I will form my own views.

It was well directed, well acted, well shot and terribly wrote. So slow boring and missed a great opportunity for another great Tarantino movie.
He could of made it about a hippy gang who were murdering celebs, with the story of Rick and Cliff running alongside it. Then keep the same ending when the break into the wrong house and get killed. Quote:

Well played and liked what they did with the ending
