Sales Tax On Ebay

I thought that only businesses in your state can collect sales tax. I’m looking at an iPhone wallet case from China on eBay and sales tax is added to the total.

Why would a company in China collect Massachusetts sales tax? Or why does eBay add it unless they have a presence in Massachusetts that I’m not aware of?

tax is now being charged by ebay and goes to your state directly, the seller does not receive it. you should keep up with new laws in your state and talk to your state senators if you don't like them.

Pam, EVERYTHING in this fucking state is either taxed or has a fee. Half of the shit has a 'User Fee' on top of the tax.

I find its seller dependent. I just bought an oculus quest for $399 and was not charged any state tax plus free shipping. The seller was also US based, just not in the same state as me

it stopped being seller dependent couple of months back, you're just lucky being in a state that doesn't charge internet tax.

Yep they copied EU MOSS VAT thing, where VAT is based on location of buyer, not seller.

The thing is, I do live in a state that charges internet sales tax. I get charged for literally everything except the occasional transaction on ebay. This being one of those cases...just happy to save the $25. Just purchased on Saturday too...go figure

If you do what I do, and file a D.N.A. Request (Did Not Arrive) not only will you not pay any sales tax, but the item itself is free as well !

Thats how I got myself 16Gbs Memory and a 4 TB SSD last weekend...

The sales tax rose from 5% to 6.25% while I was in a coma. But the iPhone case was 9% sales tax so I couldn’t understand why.

If eBay is collecting tax on Massachusetts sales, then shouldn’t they collect 6.25% tax?

I used to collect sales tax for Massachusetts sales only. I wasn’t required to collect for other states.

I’ll research it more but like ttfo says, everything is taxed in Taxachusetts. Food isn’t taxed but takeout food is taxed with meals taxes.

The phone case is iffy because they accept returns at my expense. I’ll look in the USA sales instead.
