I used one for about a month until my friends made me feel guilty about it even though the dialer I used was 100% legit.

I never promoted them but i did got "special bill" thanks to them. It is just crazy how some people got bill up to 10000$ due it.

Italian dialers were the market changers those days.

That's how I got into the industry, didn't make anything with dialers but I pressed on and made money with TGPs

but nobody counted the damage they made.
the guy who invented the dialer was a very good friend of mine and even he stopped to work with it after 2 years because he saw how fraudy it was used.
at the end the carriers throw all the dirt on us but they where the ones that got up to 60% share.

But funny is, that dialers made my my first paysite biz successful
When I started my first paysites in 2000 I just promoted them with "No dialer" and made a LOT of money with that.

Never used them because I always considered them as a pure scam.

no it was a german guy - i think it was in 97 oder 98 when he came up with this and he did not have fraud in mind.

Dialers where everywhere back in 1995, stuffed in the adult section in Cds sold along with computer magazine.
They are a kind of an extension of internet access dialers like AOL, etc. using a premium rate number.
In 1995, french company CPIO MULTIMEDIA was selling (yes, selling) dialers to people who wanted to make money with their dialers. It wasn't called an affiliate program but that what it was. A real ripp off for endusers (86€ / hour as far as I remember) but it was a real easy way to make fast cash with a couple of crappy web pages... Too easy...
It's very likely that this kind of early affiliate programs were already active in other countries.
So maybe a german guy invented dialers, but it wasn't in 97.

He did this well before 97-98. American kid (at the time) and he built the dialernfor the Australians. I’ve talked to a number of other folks over the years who have corroborated this. Sorry.

if dialers had never come then not so many would have starved to death when they were gone.

the fairy tale of simple money is probably based to a large extent on the dialer and has brought so many lucky knights to become a webmaster.

but they only worked on modems and ISDN. with DSL the problem was gone.
