So did HBO's Watchmen suck or did it really suck?
So did HBO's Watchmen suck or did it really suck?
The original Watchmen comic is my favorite of all time and this was a paint-by-numbers heavy-handed, yet internally inconsistent mess. Great soundtrack and a few good performances, but the writing chose the joke level cardboard villain of "Nazi Klansmen" while erasing the ethnicity of multiple characters and supporting someone who murders or tortures someone like every episode as a better choice for power than someone who is smart and hardworking and keeps her promises and wants to end world hunger and such. Morally bankrupt, without asking any tough or interesting questions, and also surprisingly dull for long stretches.
One friend of mine said he felt it was a simple love story. I didn't think it worked as a love story. As with everything on this series, they told rather than showing, so there is no visceral sense of why they are in love, other than predestination. Admittedly there is predestination in the source material, but they leaned on it too hard. He's Manhattan and she's some random violent police officer. Then, when he's human-ish, he's played by a really hot actor and her...not so much.
