How are you building your sites?
Hello!
I'm pretty new here and everytime I come to a new place, I like to just be social for a bit. (Yes I think I have a problem, no I don't wanna talk about it). So could we maybe discuss how you all like to build your websites? Me myself usually likes to code everything from scratch. But for my latest website, I used a CMS. Can't really say I liked it.. Feels like I lost all the control. How do you create yours and why? |
Welcome to the zoo . . .

Was just about to ask what you mean but I think you mean, welcome to this site. Or am I wrong?

Thanks! :D |
welcome a board!

Some of them I built from scratch, others I use some templates and I modify them on my needs and of course, for others I just use WordPress.

It depends what kind of site you want to create. WordPress can be very good for blogs, small sites, but not so much for big video tubes et cetera.

Custom CMS.

That's so true j3rkules. Do you think I'm wrong if I say that you should also consider the time the site should be alive? I mean, it's easier to update a custom created website than a wp site for example. Like if you wanna add functions that won't really work correctly in, let's say wordpress, you get kind of stuck.
The only reason you would get stuck in a custom created website is if you don't know how to do it. What I mean is, do you also think wordpress site are not as long-lived as custom created sites? |
Hi,
I write my sites from scratch. Blogs, tubes, auto sites, pin sites etc. It's much easier and I have full control of everything. + I can add anything I want. 10 years ago, when I started building my first sites, I used wordpress, but finding a good theme, understanding how it's made + adding new features, finding good plugins for my ideas took too much time. + wordpress comes with too many files. I have a minimalist blog script I wrote for fun, which only has like 4-5 php files. It's fast, works great + I can add anything to it whenever I like. Cheers, z |
wp and custom need not be mutually exclusive. that said if a cms doesn't feel right to you get rid of it. you know yourself best and never doubt that
re your sig, keep in mind my cats are probably better at graphic design than me (my skills in that area are about as great as Howdy's spelling) but was really easy -took I think 3 seconds- to resize your sig using photoscape. a free, very basic tool that can get the job done resized yours down to 200x36 if you want it https://imgur.com/a/QtXy7V0 https://i.imgur.com/LCsievy.png welcome to gfy |
Oh god, thanks!
I was thinking about resizing it using the signature page.. I'm currently stupid cause of too much work. Yea, the site is up and I changed the parts I didn't like from my CMS. It's just annoying that they built it in the way they did, can't create my own plugins at the moment (Can probably learn from somewhere though). And again, thanks a lot :D |

You can ask GFY member SexJoker, he built TWO VOD pay sites for me with a shop etc...but I have no clue if it was a template of sorts or from scratch. All what I know that both sites work flawlessly for more then 3 years now...:thumbsup for SexJoker :thumbsup

Any Ideas for HogSex.com I have no money for a script but skype me if you can help out in a design...

Nice answers all, and thanks emmasexytime.
Why all of the sudden talk about money and develop for others? Am I missing something? |

I LOVE you bonsai projects! Very creative and beautiful |
I've been here longer ;)

I've coded my own and have used CMS of some kind. Depends on the project. We have programmers now so if I do code something it is usually a concept test and then it gets recoded by our staff for production.

off the shelf scripts force your workflow to conform to someone else's idea of how software should function. someone like myself could write everything custom for you, but it's probably not cost-effective if you're just starting out. IMO best way is to gradually learn a bit of php and within months you'll probably realize an advantage over trying to use other people's scripts. |
