Links opening in new tabs

Should you have outside links on a tgp opening on the same page or a new tab? Or does it even matter?
Thanks for any advice

Some ppl suggest that images should be opened into a new tab/window too, keeps the user on your site, maybe good for Google? i'm interested to hear opinions here too ;)

I have the images opening on the same page. But my header links to other sites of mine I have opening in new tabs. Just was wondering if thats the norm.

Most of the time I want to be sure they are staying on my site so I open in the same tab. If I am sending them to another site, I open in a new tab so my site is still there as well =)

Photos we always open in a new tab.

while agreeing with this, i try not to cheat so most of the time i exchange the same page, probably kicking myself in the foot, but at least for links, they are opened and the user can always back space to your page or retype... :2 cents:

My main concern is google seeing them as a popup. I still rather have them open on their own tab.

well no, google will see new pages and new tabs as pop ups, which is why when I used to link images or new sites, links etc to new tab, they donīt always appear...

and this being the reason why now I just send from page to change the page, no popup and google wonīt block it, probably best for SEO too :2 cents:
