Does The Super Bowl Affect Sales?

The NFL's biggest game and day is this Sunday - the Super Bowl! With the rise of fantasy football, gambling being legalized around the country and everyone grooving on those funny/cool/annoying TV commercials (not to mention the always glitzy halftime show) so I was wondering:

Do you think the Super Bowl affects porn sales? This year it seems to have some affect. Combined with the post-Holidays credit card hangover and January is turning out to be a slow month. Also Valentine's Day is just two weeks away so maybe people are saving up for some online romance on Feb. 14th. :)

What's your experience?

Don't forget Spring Break is coming up too, kids out of school, that will affect sales. Then you've got tax time, everyone will be dealing with IRA contributions and filing tax returns. By May everyone will be budgeting their disposable income for Memorial Day weekend, and then we're pretty much into the summer slowdown while everyone is out enjoying the sunshine with their kids instead of spending money on porn. Once Labor Day rolls around and the kids are back in school everyone will be paying off their summer vacation credit card bills.

October seems good, kids are in school and weather will be cooling down and there's still 4-6 weeks until Thanksgiving. October will definitely be a good sales month this year. Hopefully that will carry us through the bad sales periods that are Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas, and New Years.

In years past the superbowl used to be our best sales day of the year, larger than black friday, larger than xmas. We still get spikes during this time of year though. The 'hangover' from xmas spending is pretty much done at this point, so that is very unlikely to be any lingering problem for many.

Overall, in my experience, things go in phases and little is consistent over time. The 'summer slowdown' was never really a thing, it may have been one year hear and there but I have definitely not seen a trend with that over the years. September used to be a huge sales month because young adults would be moving out for the first time to go to college and had new cc's and new pc's. Now everyone has had that same freedom long before that so that trend went away.

I think its best to not assume the time of year, season or happenings are effecting sales. Just go over the data, test your sites, audit your content and find ways you can make them better so when any traffic waves do come in you will have everything they are looking for and the sign ups will happen.

True there are many ups-and-downs and this is definitely a cyclical business. You gotta learn how to ride the waves! :)

Very true! I generally just keep my head down and never stop working so when the traffic waves do come, as you said, the signups flow.

I think how good/bad the halftime show is, as well as the game itself, determines somewhat how focused people are on the event. Let's hope for a blowout so people turn to porn for their entertainment. :)

Yep, every year. We would wake up and notice sales were down... Same with the World Series.

yep, big time IF you're relying on the US market
