If you could Expat Anywhere in the world as an American where would it be?
 

May be time to leave. Always considered another country.

Family of 4 wife and kids speak Spanish.

I’m thinking Panama, Costa Rica, Belize and Italy ( if Italy ever recovers)

Anyone have any thoughts?

I would never leave America unless I had to. Everything I love is here. I could stay here and feel like I left the country.

But if I had to, I'm going to southwest Canada. Victoria preferably.

Trust me it’s not a decision I take lightly. I’m an American thru and thru and not sure how i would fair in a new culture without my creature comforts of home.

Costa Rica hasn't been a good expat destination for 10 years :2 cents:

The questions I would ask of you, what are you looking to accomplish out of a move to another country. Define what qualities in life and or business are most important to you and your family. How is your health? Do you have a solid flow of income coming in regularly? Will you need a new source of income when you move? Will it be earned online or via a brick and mortar type business. How important is it for you to retain your current citizenship? Is traveling Visa free important to you?

I've lived and work on 4 different continents.

For you, with speaking Spanish, your choices are:

1. Colombia - Love Bogota, love Medellin. And there's way more than that. Depends if you like the city, what weather you like - so many choices.
2. Panama would be the other end of the spectrum. They use the dollar, huge US influence. Easy enough to get citizenship thru investment. Population 4 million - very manageable.
3. In between those two choices is Ecuador. They use the dollar but don't like Americans. I really like Guayaquil!

I wouldn't recommend Costa Rica...

Why there is no Spain in your choice list ?

Costa Rica is has been, but it has some good stuff

Being an expat myself one thing I can highly recommend is: Go to whatever place something like 3 months first and try to live a normal daily life there.

Too many people who decide after a 2 week vacation with beach, drinks and eating out every day "this is a place where I want to stay forever"

and then they move and then reality hits them

Too little information to give any advice, what is it your looking for, investing, relaxing, partying, reduction in living cost, retiring, in need of job? what climate, so many more choices than listed here.

I know many places on 4 continents.... Depends on your needs,setup and money.

Italy is nice for holiday.

Not about cost of living honestly. I live in a very nice area of Vegas.

Nahh the pandemic is everywhere. There is no escaping that. I moved most all my investments to cash today so when this market crashes more I’m safe

The USA has been going down hill for the last few years. The clusterfuck that is currently going on here just has me weighing my options. Next 12-18 months I may be able to pick up some deals in real estate .

Vancouver is better IMHO. The problem i have with Victoria is your stuck on the island no mather what 9pm till 7am NO ferries :1orglaughhttps://www.bcferries.com/m/schedule...h03161701.html ! Also the cost of the ferries is another expensive story lol.

The left have no chance of getting into power look what happened to bernie if was beaten by a guy who will get diagnosed with dementia in the coming year. Trump is a loudmouth and a bit brash but he's no danger to the US.

The world will change after this, but you and your family are safer in the US then you are in South America.

As someone whos lived in more third-world countries than I can count on one hand I can tell you you will miss 'that things just work' in the west.
I'm back in England now (pandemic and business reasons). The holiday period will wear off after a month or two in any country.

I have been an expat in 4 different countries ... and id certainly recommend Spain - very friendly and welcoming, nice weather, rich cultural life and beautiful babes everywhere

Secondarily Cyprus is an excellent place...English is spoken fluently by all, taxes are extremely low, its hoooot and the beaches are great ....

Nah how things "just work" in the west is the reason I left. And I know many feel the same.
Also you're a lot safer in many places in south America comared to many places in the US and vice versa.
My holiday period hasn't worn of after 10 years.

But it's a more difficult decision to make when you have a family and kids I guess

Australia and New Zealand are real options if you are financially sound - I'm sort of an Ex-Pat in New Zealand - I couldn't rate it any higher...

Somewhere where the taxes are low and people are FREE

Amsterdam is #1.

Canada would be the only choice I would make based on my limited visits to other countries.

I like the European countries I've been to; but it doesn't "seem" realistic for me to live there.
I say "seem" because it could be my imagination.

Amsterdam? really, it's worse than the worst touristic places in spain and they are baaad and I felt safer in Venezuela Caracas. TO each his own I guess

Dude, you know where to go. Technically not out of the country but almost. I think it is your favorite place, I know it is one of my top 2.

Spain is great. Of course Barcelona is fantastic but I love Zaragoza. Not sure how easy it is for a family to legally emigrate to Spain/EU...

Every country is going to be a different place after this pandemic some will be affected much more than others.

It's very easy if you use company which is specialized for visa things.

Starbucks? Internet? Bagels? Hoagies?

Most creature comforts are all over the world these days.

Berlin is dirty, edgy, artsy, and open minded. It's where you can party for days on end.

Yes, there's brothels there. Yes, there's porn there. Yes, there's sex parties there. Yes, there's dark rooms in the clubs there where people fuck. Yes, there's hedonist clubs there.

Seen this a million times myself. I live about 80% of the year in Cancun Mexico. We have a house here.

If you can not earn money online or have a good retirement dont leave.

with the amazing exchange right now for Cancun, to be my neighbor renting is about 1500 to 2500 dollars on average. We live in an upscale area and everything is within walking distance. We are 1.4 KM to the water as the crow flies. 20 to 25 min driving.

Schools are not cheap if you need them.

Cars are basically the same price. Public transportation is here but it sucks and a taxi gets expensive. ( You can import your car )
Gas is almost 2 times the price.
Insurance is less than 1/3



Maybe you see a pattern there.

A simple thing that bothers people and this is just an example is. I go shopping. I want to buy grape jam. They dont carry that. Maybe one time in every 6 months I can get grape jelly but its twice the price. So my choice is Strawberry or Black berry.

Its the little things that add up against you.
