What really pisses me off about youtube 'Cheap Build' videos...

You get a video like 'Build a sim rig for $100' but when you watch it, it assumes that you already have thousands of dollars worth of power tools, circular saws, clamps, workbenches, and assorted screws, bolts, washers and other accessories etc...

Sure, great if you have all this shit already, but if you don't, you'd be better offer buying a top end $3000 pre built top end rig, cause you'd actually be saving fucking money ! :helpme

CurrentlySober 04-06-2020 06:10 AM

Oh yeah, and the car seat, the paint to make it look nice, and an actual real life friend to help you... :(

freecartoonporn 04-06-2020 07:32 AM

thanks for the video,

i have been planing to build one of this.

ps3 + g29 and this setup and i am good.

SilentKnight 04-06-2020 07:44 AM

I see that on a lot of DIY vids lately. I was watching a DIY speaker build with cheap parts and materials...and the guy was using about $10-15k worth of tools. Granted, a lot of things he did could be done with cheaper alternative tools...it'd just take longer.

They would make it in much the same way, but instead of using the string, they would use a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra+ worth $1200+ and two sets of JABRA EVOLVE 65 MS MONO @ $209.99 each so they could hear each other...

They would of course go on to say that they just happened to have the flagship phone and headsets just lying around the house, so it's still 'Free' or 'Cheap'
:2 cents:

I've been looking to get back into sim racing again but the UK has zero stock of cockpits right now and even wheels/pedals/VR units are similarly difficult to get hold of :(

I know ! tell me about it ! If you want the absolute entry level stuff like logitech G920 sets, they are available on Amazon, but anything half decent? Not a hope in hell! Cant even get a valve index set without first paying then waiting 8 to 10 weeks !

I got a new G920 set off ebay last week at a very slightly inflated price.
A Rift S I got at a bit more slightly inflated price but it was new and sealed still but from a private seller.
I wanted the Index but yeah, they are long stated lead times and I'm guessing will be longer with the current climate.
I was watching a couple on ebay and they ended up going for £1500 and had plenty of interest even at that price. A £500+ mark up on RRP is crazy though.
As for the cockpit, I'm expecting a delivery today of a simple Playseat Challenge as that was literaly the only thing I could find in stock which will keep me going for a bit.
There are better ones listed on ebay but they don't have stock despite them saying delivery the same week (most sellers just use drop shippers I found out).
If I get into it using the basic stuff, I may well go down the Fanatec route again but it gets pricey.

Nothing wrong with any of that :) That's pretty much what I have myself at the moment, aside from the actual seat. Im looking at getting a direct drive wheel, a proper 80/20 cockpit like a P1-X and all the kit that goes with it - Triple monitor setup etc etc... Basically like what she has in the video. But Im gonna add a motion rig underneath as well. Go the whole hog :) I guess I gotta wait for stuff to become available :)

CurrentlySober 04-08-2020 08:26 AM

This is the same rig but with the motion rig attached :)

Tubevideditor 04-08-2020 09:01 AM

That is a full on rig and would be very sweet :)
I imagine thats 5k+ before even adding the PC?

Oh much more than that mate - the motion platform alone is like close to 11K before anything else... But its not like Id be getting it all tomorrow even if this virus thing wasn't happening - I need to dedicate a room to it. Its basically long term plans for my next 'toy'

Actually, your not that far off - I totted it up, just to see...

You got the rig itself, necessary to hold all the equipment in place - That's over a grand, then the seat is about 300. Another grand for a decent direct drive wheelbase, plus another 300 or so for the wheel with the connectivity. 250 for a basic fanatec shifter and 150 for the handbrake. Add on another 300 for the 'extras' like the keyboard tray, cup holder etc and then you are onto your monitors. Say 400 each for a 32 inch 1440p QHD with fast refresh rates, so that's 1200, and the stand and mounts etc is another 299 or so...

Best spec gaming pc built for triple monitor output etc, (Built yourself) would still be another 2200 min, and then there's all the extra leads and cables etc, so pop in another 100 for them...

Roughly with PC that's £7300 - So yeah - About 5K without the PC - Actually, quite a bit cheaper than I thought tbh :)

CurrentlySober 04-09-2020 04:21 AM

Doh! Forgot the pedals !

Add on about another 350 for a clubsport V3 set from fanatec. But I suppose if a lot of the stuff is coming from fanatec, you can get some of it reduced as a bundle...

Hows your playseat? Arrived yet? How you finding it ?

The Stand he has in the video is similar to what I have atm, but mine is a cheaper version that the gt omega, but mines rock solid, and not wobbly like he says his is...

Its actually ok and was worried that the seat would be too high but its alright.
Finding the wheel a bit small though so have been online at Fanatic today and the Sim Lab site ordering some bits :)
Maybe I should have just waited and not bought twice but who knows how long it will be until the better stuff arrives.
I should add that VR is great having never used it on a racing game before but makes me feel a little sick sometimes.

Absolutely right about the wheel. Especially on Dirt Rally 2.0 - You cant get the correct rotation needed without crossing arms and it being awkward,. Another inch or so on the diameter of the wheel would be perfect. I'm not gonna buy twice though. Like I say, I'm gonna wait and do it 100% next time :) Enjoy your playseat :thumbsup

tfto 04-09-2020 07:19 AM

Don't get me started on those fuckin DIY Youtube videos. They make everything look so easy that you can do it yourself.

During the winter, my snowblower developed a problem. Like almost everyone else, I went to Youtube to find one of those Fix it Yourself videos. Almost every one of those mother fucker videos made the fix look so easy. What I failed to take into account was, those mother fuckers had made the repair hundreds of times before. They were in a heated workshop and those mother fuckers had all the correct hand tools needed for the job. Fuck them!.

I will be sitting on the floor in my unheated garage. With not all the correct tools needed and, I have never made this repair before!. WTF?. Finally, I found a few videos of Billy Bob, sitting on the floor in his freezing cold garage. Only a few hand tools and an 18 pack of Rolling Rock. His way of making the repair actually worked.

And the videos of removing wallpaper are total bullshit. It's not that easy!

I'm trying but its a pain in the ass using my 'work' computers as i can't see the screen from the cockpit so setting things up is tricky right now.
I don't want to buy a standalone machine as I have 2 decent machines already (1080TI + 2080TI cards) but i'm now having to wait on another monitor - plus extension cables, additional wireless mouse/keyboard and a USB hub and probably something else I've not factored in too :(

Why would you trying to DIY build something strong enough for you to sit on without the tools to manipulate and fabricate the materials? :warning

Were you hoping for a guide that used Lego?

If you're going to spend $5k+ on a simulator why not just get started in kart racing?

Cause I can't fit a kart and a karting track inside my house... :( I only have one room... :(

But seriously, if I actually went Karting, I could actually get really hurt. Plus I could only go Karting at certain times, based upon the track availability. However, with a nice sim rig, and a range of different wheel styles (F1, Rally, GT etc) I can basically drive any vehicle, on virtually any track, in any weather conditions, at any time of the day or night that I damn well choose to do so :)

All safe and sound in my own home... Sure, it's a big investment, but once you have it all setup, what you can do with it is only limited by your own imagination ! Likewise I can also join in leagues and clubs etc, and live race against others from all over the world, so theres a social aspect of it too :)

Take a look at these in action :)

Are you gonna be using a PC? If so, get the G29 instead of the G920 ! I didn't realise it at the time myself, but the 'Playstation' version has lots more buttons and features than the 'xbox' version, but if yo are using them on a PC the xbox 1 / Playstation compatibility is moot.

Of course, if you plan to use a console, then ignore me :)

Cant be arsed with F1-18 nor RaceRoom. Saving iRacing for another day, and my proper rig :)

Nothing right now as I sold the wheel on and waiting on the rest of my stuff to come.
So far this week, I got a curved 34" 120hz gaming monitor, a set of Fanatec V3 Clubsport pedals and a Sparco R100 chair.
The rest to follow soon hopefully but all I played so far was Assetto Corsa but did buy a half price sub to iRacing.

Just to add to the above, (not so much specifically for you, but more incase anyone else is interested in the logitech wheels and reads this thread) there's also the shifter... It may be a separate purchase, and it's pretty cheap.. But is it worth it?

For the price, yes. Although it is indeed a cheaply made product, and it does feel somewhat like a toy, I still say its worth purchasing if you get the logitech wheel and pedals.... Why? Because with one simple quick mod, it's also a handbrake for drifting or rally games, or a sequential shifter (Up / Down) for any racing game... Here's the simple mod...

And here is mine. I had to use a few 'O Rings' as I couldn't get the correct thickness :)

https://i.imgur.com/U1x9KJl.jpg

Anyway, just thought Id suggest it if anyone's interested, as although its not the best quality shifter in the world, that simple trick makes it extremely versitile and definatly worth the purchase...

Mr Pheer 04-16-2020 05:01 PM

Interesting. I was going to purchase a different shifter and handbrake.

I spent a few years racing shifter karts and mini sprints, so I'm used to things with sequential shifters.

Of course, i could always try the o-ring trick and maybe 3d print a better mod for it.

I got the G920 because of xbox/pc compatibility. I'm not a Playstation guy, but i do have three Xbox 1's here. Although I plan on using this mostly with my PC and Oculus headset.

Indycar and Nascar running iRacing on TV during the quarantine is hugely to thank for that. It exposed a lot of people to virtual racing that had never paid much attention to it before.

I got my G920 for $350 on Amazon but the prices are all over the place.

CurrentlySober 04-17-2020 03:15 AM

Yeah, I'm not a PS guy or Xbox guy, but I automatically bought the Xbox wheel because I do use an xbox controller to play certain games on the PC. However had I known that they were both compatible with my PC before I purchased, I would have got the PS version as the extra buttons would have been very handy indeed. After all, you assign the buttons in the game anyway so the more buttons you have at hand, the more you can do direct from the wheel. I just didn't realise that before purchasing, but as you have an xbox anyway, you certainly made the right choice for you :)

Yeah, by all means 3D print a mod, but believe you me, as simple as that o-ring trick looks, it works PERFECTLY. You want the 6 slot box? Let the o-rings loose so they just sit at the base of the shifter. Want the other? Hook em back on. Less than 3 seconds to change between both modes :)

Nascar Heat 4 was $12.90 on Steam yesterday. Looks and runs pretty good.

I raced trucks for a bit on iRacing tonight. Trucks are kinda wild, the rear end will step out pretty easy when you're on the throttle coming out of a turn, the setup is quite a bit different from a car.

So he made a chair with a wheel? And he says it's "cheap"? Ha...

^ The price of materials is ZERO.

Tubevideditor 04-20-2020 10:49 AM

I have everything now except the Sim Labs cockpit and have no idea how long it will take to get here.
I'm tempted to make a makeshift homemade wooden cockpit as being an ex carpenter from years ago, I do have all the tools and materials to make one :)
It just won't be as adjustable or as nice looking and be much heavier.

Cool. Nascar isn't a big thing in the UK, so Id have to admit that I had not heard of that game :) Likewise Im holding off on iRacing until I have better kit. How do you find the pedals? I seem to find that the brake is too close to the gas. In a real car, it's not an issue, but on this, everytime I come off the gas and go for the break, I'm still catching the gas. Admitly, I don't have that problem with no shoes on, but then I never need to drive a real car without shoes either !

Good stuff. Personally Id just set it up at a desk, to check it all works etc, and then wait for the cockpit. Even if you have the skills and ability to make one, you'll still have to take it all aparat in the future, so Id just wait - But thats me !

I find the pedals to be too close together, but I will solve that when I get the rig built. I'll mount them upside down and space them to my liking. I'm still having fun with it at my desk though.

Already have the wood here to start building, just need to clean off my work table so I can fire up my table saw for the first few cuts.
