Webcam problem.

OK here's what I need to do.

I've got some really good quality HD video cameras and I want to use one of the older ones as a webcam.

What hardware do I need to make this happen?

candyflip 05-13-2020 07:17 AM

Hardware that is in very short supply at the moment. And anyone who does have them has priced them up as a result.

Elgato Camlink is can do one camera and they're about $150...if you can find one.

Blackmagic ATEM Mini can do up to 3 cameras and a computer screen for $300 and $600.

Well I can afford the cost but they do seem expensive for what I'm hoping to do. However, now that I know what the product is I'll look around for cheaper alternatives.

Everything is sold out.

Even if you could find any of those I listed above, you'd be paying much more for them.

People are telling the CamLink for $400. It's a $129 piece of hardware. I've had offers to buy one of my ATEM Mini's for $600 and I only paid $275 for it. These devices are a hot commodity right now.

I have a CamLink just sitting here. In fact I think I have 2

Where are they selling for $400?

Amazon. There are actually some listed for $600+ at the moment. $300 or so, even used.

That doesn't mean people are buying them there for those prices, but I've seen people selling them on the Facebook groups to people begging to buy them at massive markups.

I've rented my ATEM Mini out at $50 a day and have it booked to rent out a few more times over the next few weeks. It cost me $275 and I've made more than that just letting others use it.

I use a $45 HDMI to USB video grabber, Ebay is filled with cheap Chinese unbranded capture devices... Works like a charm. 1080P / 30 frames.

Tested it on 3 camera's; GoPro Hero Black 3, a 4K sony handycam and a semi-pro 4K camera by JVC. All work great. 4K gets downsized to HD automatically, no need to change camera settings.

Cool part, you can record the video on an USB thumb drive while using it to stream on your PC at the same time.

Just look on Ebay for "HDMI game streamer" or "USB Game Capture Box", something like that. You'll find a ton of generic video capture devices. Just don't buy those really cheap ones (under $20), because they ain't going to be in HD. ;)
