If you could ExPat anywhere where would you go?

Considering retiring outside the US. Currently thinking of Costa Rica Panama or Belize as well as Greece Portugal and Spain.

I知 married with a 15 yo son so I知 not looking for nightlife. Climate is Key!

Costa Rica was a great place to expat 20 years ago. Today not so much.

Of the places you listed, Portugal would be my first choice, followed by Spain.

Evil Chris 09-19-2020 11:42 AM

Somewhere in central Europe.

I'll stay where I am. Been to other places on Earth and haven't seen something better.

NatalieK 09-20-2020 01:16 AM

if I had a million in the bank, my choice would be Bora Bora or the Seychelles, but both of these places are expensive, Spain has always been and is my choice. We live comfortable, the climate is lovely, the air is clean, the people are amazing and of course, the foods and drinks are great value, choice and taste...

and thereエs always something to do, somewhere new to visit or go to see :thumbsup

LetterTwenty7 09-20-2020 01:26 AM

No one can really answer this question. It depends what you're looking for exactly, but all those countries sound interesting. Are you willing to learn another language, what's the quality of life index, how much do you want to spend...

Problem with exotic islands, how you can get easily bored there. Better to live on place which is close to urban megalopolises.

Brit in Cambodia 09-20-2020 02:38 AM

I've lived all over the world first things first your son is at a critical age for schooling wait till he's finished college / uni before you move

French Polynesian is beaitifull but expensive. If you've come from the west then you will appreciate things just work, If something breaks and I need a replacement I can just order it off amazon in 2 clicks rather than trudging through markets, negotiating in a language I don't fully understand and still getting charged twice as much because Im a forigner.

Doesn't happen so much in french polynesia but bare in mind if you need anything remotely even specialised you're going to be waiting a month + for it to arrive. Why belize is it for tax purposes? problem with tax havens is British and American banks get funny about tax havens and they may close your accounts

I used my parents address when I was out in Cambodia if i told natwest I was living out in Cambodia they'd have closed my account because of money laundering concerns, as far as my bank was concerned I was on an extended holiday out there. (Which may not last if you spend 5+years out there)

Your best advice is to visit any place your interested in for a month or 2 and see how you like it, after a month or two the rose tinted sunglasses start coming off.

Brit in Cambodia 09-20-2020 02:45 AM

You could also take up sailing its a nice life sailing from country to country if you've got a 40ft+ sailing boat ($150k - $400k starting price then the sky the limit.)

Tasty1 09-20-2020 03:24 AM

Lots of factors. How is your income made and are you willing to pay tax if needed. With a son i would wait 3 years so he can decide if he wants to join or first finish school or stay in the USA to live. Or maybe he loves the idea, ask him where he wants to study/live. You probably speak Spanish if you are from the USA, than i would go to Spain. I stopped school and worked on sailing ships when i was 17 and had the time of my life. Few years later went back to school to study. Maybe your son wants 1 year off. Many younger people in Holland take a 1 year travel break from school when 18.

I would just travel and stay in some places a few months to see how it is. Belize is too small, but i could live there 1 or 2 years. I would enjoy myself. Must be a hell hanging with old fat 70+ years people on a small island for years.

agreeing with Klen, Klen also mentioned the microclimate. Spain averages a temperature of 30c through summer and 20c through winter, only rains about 3 weeks of the whole year, a week in February and March, same in October and November.

The air is clear and clean because of the miles and miles of salt lakes and the terrain is unspoilt, huge mountains full of pines and woodland walks, flats of orange and lemon groves, valleys of grape vines, even some towns known for overheating such as Cordoba, an average temperature through from March to November as 35 to 40c, this year as hot as 45c, thatエs like 110 or 115f. The walls of the streets are filled with flora, to keep the oxygen in the town. Pretty cool idea and it looks amazing :thumbsup

In Ecuador you have +25 Celsius every day. Every 1 day of 365 is +25 C. They all speak Spanish. Would you live there?

A spoiler: I won't.

P.S. I've been to Spain. I liked Barcelona. Well, it's not literally Spain... It's Catalonia. When I said I liked it, I meant it's nice to be a visitor (a tourist) there. I like to stay in Barcelona for a week or maybe even for two weeks. However I won't stay there for a month for sure, because it's a very very very boring place to me.

Relaxing and boring are synonyms for me. Course these places could be nice to live the last years when you are 90 year old. BTW, what do you mean on "police do not mind adult"?

I have never been to NZ and seems I never will - a 24 hour flight is not my cup of tea. However I know that NZ is one of the most popular place in Russia for the people who want to live their last days in peace. I'm not joking. It's really very popular here as the last harbor.

go somewhere buddist...cambodia...cheap as fuck...you can buy a pre-fab on rented land for like 10K$...why would you want to try so hard and pay out of the ass for expensive western rent?...you own the place for 10K...if the kid gives you shit tell him he will be drowning in pussy...this will change his mind...

That place looks exactly like a 10k place. Some wood scraped together to give you shelter from modest rain and wind.

Here's another idea for you, since you seem to like it.

Cheap as fuck. Costs like 100euros. Land for miles. Climate a little hot, but humidity in Taiwan is worse.

Last year i stayed 5 months in cambodia, i didn't want to live there. The beach city Sihanoukville is destroyed by the Chinese. The island in front don't have good internet (but still nice for a few weeks). Kampot is nice for a few weeks but you can expect that it is too hot and in rainy seasons it rains non-stop for weeks. And the cheap expats sitting with a beer on the terrace all day moved there cause Thailand got too expensive for them and the beach city Sihanoukville is ruined where many used to live. Phnom Penh is also hot, rainy and dirty most of the year. Siem Reap is also nice for a few weeks, but no sea nearby and too hot in summer and too wet in rainy season.

In Asia i would go for an island in Thailand, even if that is a little more expensive than Cambodia. And maybe Philippines, but haven't been there yet.

After spending 2 years in Asia i will be moving back to the Americas for 2 years or so.

10K is an awfully cheap ticket to a new life...you can do this in thailand/vietnam/cambodia/philipines...a prefab is 10K...0 rent...food cheap as fuck...

south america is a great place as well...you should do zig zag...a few years south america, a few years asia and back...zig zag...

Oh, you got an "estimate".. And now we're already at 34k euros. In a humid shithole, in the middle of nowhere. I would not pay 34k for this video if money grew on trees.

Like i said, check zimbabwe. That hut you can get for 100 euros, and they would probably sell you like 100 acres of land in the desert for 100 euros more.

I thought a baller like you that was buying private islands would actually link to something relevant, not shitholes where low western class is looking to experience middle class shithole life

My emphasis was DRIVING ( not flying or taking a boat) so drive to Japan from Vladivostok. Do you own some sort of amphibious vehicle?

And if I have to explain what you can do and enjoy in:

Germany
Austria
Slovakia
Hungary
or even in Poland, then you have to go back to school and take courses in Geography, History and Art. :2 cents:

Well, that is definitely case in Croatia - there was once news article how some african businessman visited Split and he called it "Africa with electricity" . Serbia does not have tourism so they cant charge high prices for nothing.

Remember a few things when trying to decide.

1. You work in porn or at least part time. Need good quality connection and for it to be ok to do.
2. Cost of living over all. Can you afford it.
3. Will you really like it. I would advise 90 days or more to see. Rent a house and check it out. Find out what its like.
4. Ability to get what you want/need to live/work.

If you require certain types of equipment to work can you get it? Replacements or similar? Do you drive to get it or need to Fly? Can you afford that?

Its not as simple as packing up and going. there is a LOT to think about.

PS. would not go to Belize.

I disagree on this point. My parents traveled for extended periods in my teens and it was fine. I grumbled and complained of course, but I also am now fluent in 3 languages... I think you're even late, best age to experience other culture, go to different schools is 11-16.

Of the places you mentioned, I vote Portugal.
