True story.

I had an English teacher in High School who went back to school to get his Masters when he was in his 50s.

For a music appreciation course, he had to learn an instrument and chose piano.

He ended up becoming a part-time concert pianist.

You are never too old to pick up new stuff.

good luck, i tried several times but my fingers are not tall enough

Manfap 10-02-2020 10:08 AM

it's a good instrument to learn, you don't have to be great to enjoy just banging out a few tunes.

Ross from on here invited my wife and i to join him and his wife at one of those huge old fashioned houses with a shitload of rooms etc and one of the rooms had a piano and it annoyed the living shit out me that i sat down and couldn't play a single tune.

Amazing the small unexpected things that pop up and turn out to be a turning point.

I'll give it a bash. I'm aware how much practice/dedication is required...

Go for it. I started playing Cello at 49. It's not that hard to learn an instrument with steady practice and it's a great way to take your mind off everything else.

VR is going to be ideal for remote learning piano..

I was forced to take piano lessons for 12 years growing up. I hated every minute of it.

Two years ago I decided to see if I could relearn. What I found out was that not only did I retain almost everything in my head, so did muscle memory in my hands.

Another thing I managed to realize was that I didn't just learn to play the piano growing up, but that I had music theory drilled into my head from a very young age and I can pick up on most instruments with a little bit of effort.

Everything but the drums. That's a talent I will never possess.

Was a dude on tiktok live streaming and he was only 20 yet was just taking requests for about an hour and seemed to be able to play any song anyone asked. Must be neat.... :pimp

Just imagine what may have happened if you kept practicing. Perhaps you could have scored with Christie Brinkley instead of Billy Joel.

Well, now you have to post the dueling banjos. I would but you know, I don't know how to do it right.

And if someone has an equal piano battle that would be cool too.

I don't think I have an artistic bone in my body - Good luck!..

GAMEFINEST 10-07-2020 09:55 PM

I played lead guitar in a blues-rock band in the seventies. I've got a 64 stratocaster that's priceless. I'm picking it back up now and have to get my calluses back. I'm a natural drummer though, but never developed that talent enough professionally. I have a real nice Yamaha electric piano collecting dust. I bought it for my son to learn but it didn't catch his interest. So I'm polking around on it to see if I can do something on it. Motivation is a big factor. When I was younger, playing in a band got you laid big time. Now, I'm just the old guy at the bar.

For guitar I would recommend learning the blues. The blues provide a structure with a beginning, middle and end. Youtube has a ton of videos that will help you learn. Then you can order cd's of blues with bass and drums that don't have a guitar track. That's a big help to learning how to improvise. If I had these tools back in the late 60's and early 70's I could have been a contender.

I'm past the daddy issue thing, now into the granddaddy issues thing. Of course my wife is 23 years younger than me so there is that!

LetterTwenty7 10-09-2020 02:38 AM

Good luck. 39... you're not old, if that is what you are trying to say. Go for it.

Why is it that the girl has "Daddy" issues rather than the guy having "Daughter" issues?

Freaks.

Usually daughter issues put daddy in jail.

The, "Music theory drilled into my head" part...

Yup. And this happens with many things you do that become second nature. Including typing on a keyword or learning/knowing another language.

It just takes longer. A child can practice 2 hours a day and become proficient. An adult needs 12 hours a day for 6 months to grow neurons. If I ever have 6 months I will.
