What's the best router

Need to replace our router... What is the best router for WiFi these days?

Pink24 10-25-2020 02:44 PM

Is there such a thing as a best router? Do they not all do the same thing?

I used to use a really old one from AOL days of past. I changed by provider a few years ago and they said I needed their router as it was the best etc etc.

Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference from the peice of shit 90's AOL router and the 20 year+ newer router I ended up with.

Maybe wait a month or two and see what the new 6e routers are like? Supposed to be pretty good, but so is everything new lol. Asus has one available now I think.

sarettah 10-25-2020 02:54 PM

I have a really nice portable Ryobi router. Does a great job.

I guess they don't provide you with one in the US?

In the UK, you get the newest version when you sign up, or you can request the latest version for free if you have been with them for a few years. They even include wi-fi extenders for free, to place around your house in order to ensure complete coverage.

I know that isn't of any use to you, but it just surprised me that if you are paying for internet, you need to pay again for the router to make it work.

sandman! 10-25-2020 03:09 PM

I bought one of these a few months ago happy with it

https://amplifi.com/alien

sandman! 10-25-2020 03:10 PM

In the USA most internet providers will rent you equipment for $10-15 a month it’s cheaper in the long run to buy your own

Ahhh OK, I got yah. I just thought that they did not provide it all. Fair play. I certainly wouldn't want to rent one either. :thumbsup

A lot of ISPs provide them here, but not all and not on all plans. Plus the ones that they provide aren't the best.
Edit: I forgot renting one is an option, too, lol

I live in a HOA area - Homeowners Association - and we pay dues to live here. For $119/month I get free Internet, a huge gym, four outdoor pools, and one indoor pool.... It's awesome. They provide the modem, but the router is on us.

I don't need a router, it is built into the modem. I use cable, not sure if the people that need a router are using phone company products.

sandman! 10-25-2020 10:07 PM

What you have is a modem/router combo I have cable and use a modem and a router.

Hate to break it to you (well, not really) but if you are paying $119 a month, you dont have "free internet, gym and pool"...

I've been using a Netgear R7000 and slaved an Asus with it because I have 3 stories to cover. No issues whatsoever and I have 1 gig download and 50 gig upload.
Waiting for the new specs and will probably go with Netgear again although Asus is a winner as well.

You bought the car but the company that sold it to you still expect you to pay for your own gas.

Most ISPs in the UK give out junk routers. The BT homehub range have always been very decent when I've tried it on my ISP. Generally though, I just buy Asus routers.

oh, and the speed difference between a really old router and a new router would be noticable, especially when switching from one GFY username to another! So please, restrict yourself from BS and shut up :2 cents:

And, just who the fuck are you.

Another member of the forum that doesn't know her arse from her elbow!!

Who the hell is Adam?

FYI switching provider will make zero difference to your GFY experience.

My guess if you are some fucked up skank from the UK that decided to move to Spain for a better life.
You now pimp yourseflf out there with your "fella" pretending you live the good life.

Adam, come on now, you continue to show your dyslexia in your posts.

Besides, I don´t need to pretend, move to Spain & you´ll realise how good life really is! But then you couldn´t rely on government support, and Spain doesn´t appreciate assholes!

Like baddog, I think you're out of line. Pink24 wasn't trolling you, didn't attack you and merely provided his/her experience. Contrary to what you may believe, not every new GFY member is a fake nick. Some are actually new people joining our community.

Any router without 5g is fine with me. Personally, I prefer not to be bombarded by high energy radiation all day long.

Yeah, I'm sorry you caught me in a bad mood. I've been called Adam, Johnny and various other names since I joined. None of the are right.

it seems so. I was reading about routers for the last few days and even if I didn't finish the research, it seems some of the ASUS models will win.

I am trying to do good planning of a home network so it is important to find the best equipment. Some of the models even have a Plex server on them, very interesting.

THE BEST FOR POWER USERS, GAMERS
THE BEST FOR LOW-COST GIGABIT THROUGHPUT
&
THE BEST FOR FUTURE-PROOF HOME NETWORKING
