Do I need both a payment gateway and payment processor for cc payments?

I am close to being done with making a site on my own for the first time but I am a bit overwhelmed with what I actually need to be able to accept credit cards payments through my website. Am I fine with just getting a payment gateway (i.e. rocketgate) and having a bank account for cc payments to be sent to? Or do I need a processor (i.e. ccbill) to pair with the gateway? Or is a gateway unnecessary and I just get a processor? Also is it a good idea to use more than one gateway or processor?

I don't have need to accept transactions with a physical card present, just accept cc payments through a web page where the customer puts his card information and confirms payment.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Rocket Gate and a merchant account are fine. Alternatively you can do the CC/Epoch.

For a new site, I would recommend going the Epoch/CCBill route. Yes, they take a fee, but that fee will save you a lot of hassle so that you can focus on building your site and your business.

Once you are making a certain amount of money, it makes sense getting a secondary processor because you'll pick up another 10% of sales easily. You'll need to do the math on what makes sense to you, but $5000 monthly in revenue would be a good mark to pull the trigger.

At some point you will want to go the merchant account route, but there are quite a few fixed fees involved and some technical knowledge required. I would recommend holding off on that until you are making around $10k a month, OR if you need to do something particular with your billing that Epoch/CCBill won't easily let you do.

Recommended line of progression:
Epoch
CCBill at $5k
merchant account at $10k

I have assisted in setting up well over 100 merchant accounts and helped with quite a few Epoch/CCBill accounts as well. If you have any additional questions, feel free to shoot me a message and I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.

Both are great options and utilizing both can be beneficial once you reach a certian volume level. I'm happy to discuss MobiusPay and our Gateway/Merchant Account solutions with you to see if its right for you at this time.

You need a merchant account, and a gateway to process. The gateway I use is eprocessingnetwork.com
