PHP version 5.4, 5.5, 5,6, 7.1, 7.2 or 7.3. The last one is recommended.

Apache or Nginx web server. The last one is highly recommended.

Everybody uses jpegs for thumbs on adult sites, as I know :)

Yes, but these are a little bit big in sizes as for thumbnails (pixels and kilobytes).
